Damn that's a tough one, it's my first time hearing of this so I would have to do more research but just as an opinion, I would have to say yes & no.
No because blockchain is supposed to be decentralised and technically 'he' wasn't selling anything so is it fair to hold him resposible for the individual exchanges on the site?
But on the other hand, I also think YES he is accountable as he facilitated the online 'housing' of the exchange and if that was his clear intention (to specifically sell those type of goods) then he knew exactly the type of things that would be sold on the site. So year he kinda is accountable :-/
But don't shoot the messenger that's just an opinion without knowing the FULL story lol

I don't know about a life sentence though that sounds hefty but again, I don't know what type of things were being sold on there or the depth of the case etc I would have to do research
