The Importance of Meaningful and Valuable Comments
Every week I like to post something to help new users. Today I would like to discuss Comments.
If you are a new user or a minnow with very few followers, this is the Number 1 thing you should be focused on.
This is how you will make friends and gain followers. Joining Discord communities is also extremely important, but I’ll talk about that more in another post.
If you don’t have any or very few followers then you shouldn't waste your valuable content by posting at this time. Very few people, if any, will see it and if your post doesn’t make more than around $2 by the 30 minute mark then it won’t reach the “hot” tab and it will pushed down the list of other “new” posts and nobody will see it at all.
You can’t succeed on Steemit alone. You need friends, followers, and a community.
The first and most important thing you should do when you first join Steemit (and even during your first few months here) is to focus on building a following of people with similar interests as yours.
People who blog about similar topics as you are the ones who will be more likely to read, upvote, and resteem you.
So, if you are a musician, start making connections with other musicians.
If you enjoy blogging about Psychology then scroll through the psychology posts and make connections that way.
Bad Comments vs. Meaningful and Valuable comments
Spam Comments:
Spam comments will not help you. You will not get any followers this way and it could be detrimental to your reputation as they are quite often flagged.
- I followed you please follow me
- Please check out my blog
- I follow and upvote you. You follow and upvote me please !!!!
- Thanks for post
Vague, Generic Comments:
Comments that are too short, vague, and generic also are not helpful. There is no indication that you actually read the post and these comments are usually ignored so they are pointless to make.
- wow
- Beautiful song
- Fantastic
- Really good job man carry on
- Great activity. Thanks for the post
- Thats great on..carry on your activity.all the best....
Meaningful, Valuable Comments:
Meaningful and Valuable comments are the key to making friends and gaining followers.
This involves specifically talking about what you liked about the post or perhaps offering a different viewpoint for further discussion. These types of comments create engagement.
Great to see the arts being promoted in its many forms. All the best to everyone. They're all winners in my book.
I saw this on YouTube!!! 😃 So if you see a like that was me 😊 I love how silly you guys are together! ♥ Beautiful
Knowing that you have been in a similar situation really gives me hope for my future and I really appreciate that…
This is very helpful for overcoming fear. Fears have only one thing in common... They prevent us from being fully who we are. Thank you for sharing.
It's definitely better to face your fears then to ignore them. This is how we grow into the version of ourselves that we want to be.
Also, it is extremely important that you respond if someone takes the time to leave a meaningful comment on your post.
I get so busy that I'm usually about a week behind on my replies which sucks and I'm sure I'm missing some comments along the way.
Don't be like me! lol
I've thought this multiple times - awesome that @isaria came through and put it in writing. When you don't have a whole lot of leverage with your own content, chiming in on existing conversations is by far the best way to bolster your SP and followers. On top of that, it's a great way to stay engaged in the community when you don't feel like producing an entire write-up yourself!
Exactly! You just stated what I was trying to say much better than I did! lol Thank you!
Haha anytime. Great OP!
your post is very interesting, I like your post, because it can add insight to me, hopefully in the future can provide better postings, so I can know many things in my life, thank you very much. and also hopefully useful for other stemit friends.
Thank you :)
Thank you so much @isaria for helping me avoid the same mistake. A whole lot of people are going to be successful on steemit because of people like you; indeed, this is mentorship at its apex.
Nice post mate keep up.the good work..... more people.like u needed at steem.
Thank you :)

This post is really helpful. Many of us went straight to posting our own articles and that's why some get frustrated easily. I know better now. Thanks so much for sharing this.
You're welcome, I did the same thing when I started :)
Wonderful advice... I’ve been here for a while now, haven’t made much headway, but I’m still a huge fan of the platform... definitely need to focus more on my networking, connecting with the communities here, but I’m pleased with the circles I’ve found so far...
I'm glad you found some circles!

While it does bother me when my posts go unnoticed I still take it as a lesson as far as creating content goes... if and when I do finally build up a following I at least know that I won’t have to worry too much about that aspect...
well, at least I think content is decent, ha ha...
I’m hoping to get up and running with dsound and dtube soon, donmaybe those will help me to get things moving a bit more... we shall see...

Although I did start posting before spending time commenting, I still think that was the right thing for me to do SOLELY because I just needed to start something to get myself out of my writer's block and my funk. I also wasn't expecting anyone to read anything I had to say, either, but it woke up my inspiration for writing again and that made me interested in other people's writing. I joined challenges and read everything that other people submitted. I left genuine comments on everything that held my interest (I don't get into religious stuff, politic and I don't even understand most of the crypto talk, so I stick with what I know for the most part)
This is a very awesome post, great advice and done in an easy to understand way AND I love that it's condensed and the bullet points are great. I have a weird love of lists and bullet points, so maybe that's just me! :)
lol thanks, I love lists and bullet points too!!!
Yes, I have learned just how important this feature of steemit is, as building a following through substantive comments is one of, if not the best method for success on this platform. Thanks for sharing!!

@conradsuperb
Thanks for your input!
Posting comments is definitely a hidden gem on steemit that a lot of noobs overlook.. It wasn't until after the first month that I realized how important constant communication was with a lot of my followers. Great advice for minnows for sure! :)
Absolutely, it's so important....for everyone...even people that have been here for awhile.
I suck at leaving comments...I need to take my own advice and work on it lol
Hi @isaria! Thanks for writing this!
I can related to your post. As a newbies in Steemit with little followers, it's hard for people to notice my post, not to mention about reading and comment on it.
I shall spend more time reading other ppl posts and comment on it instead in order to build my reputation. :)
Great I'm glad to help!

@isaria The newbies like myself thank you for your great insight! I’ve been reading other tips as well and yours really hit the spot! I honestly see a lot of spamming going around and I’m trying my best to leave a meaningful comment when I have the chance. You just gained a follower! Thank you.
Yay I'm glad I could help!

New minnow around here, and i would like to say that sometimes comments are better than the posts.
Its really good when you comment anything and you start a good conversation with someone. Great things come from that.
So true, some of the comments I've seen could be posts themselves!

Already joined palnet. Good people there!
I Will check the minnow university, ty!
Often times I have difficulty to come up with a topic to write about. Reading other peoples posts help initiate my writing. A good comment goes a long way in getting attention and upvotes. Like many users this thing call commenting is in itself something to learn and do more often than not.
I did not know a post had to reach $2 to be in the hot category. Wonder how much to get to trending or promoted? Thanks.
I'm not sure of the exact numbers. It's just something I've noticed with my own posts.
:)
I think there should be more posts like yours. The essentials from articles like this should be extracted and structured as guidelines for us - the new users on Steemit :)
Thanks! We are working on that for Minnow University actually.

I've been trying to do both - posting and commenting, with the emphasis on commenting. It can be a bit demoralising when there's no action on your post and you don't know why. This is the end of my first week and I've already made a few real connections which is great. But I get sucked into the gamification side of things and feel I'm crashing around in the dark with that. I'm still not clear why SP is so important. I keep reading about it and then keep forgetting. I suppose it's just that it's all new and I need to be more patient!
When you say "very few followers", do yo have a number in mind when there are enough to make our posting more worthwhile?
Please don't feel demoralized. You've only been here for a week...it takes time to build!
And you've already made some connections so that is good!
Just keep commenting and following people you like and it will work out.
You may notice some more traction with your posts when you hit around 100, 150 followers.

Thanks @isaria. I'm already involved in the Minnow Support Project and am making some nice connections. Didn't know about Minnow University so will check that out. Practising patience! 😁
I count myself lucky having come across your post today. It is very insightful for newbies like me. I'm actually new on steemit and I'm trying to find my way around and most times I don't even know what to do. How does one find the discourse group to join? I have so many questions I wish I can find someone willing to lead me through but I must say I appreciate this post of yours cos now I've know the basics.
Good, I'm glad you found my post!

Such a helpful and kind Family! I'm telling everyone I know on this planet about steemit! Two thumbs up and I'm wishing everyone the very best of health and happiness! :)

Great post on the comments and categorization of the same.
Yes, if we read the post completely, we will surely get an idea on what the user's intention behind that post.
If we are in agreement of what he/she says, we can support that and provide an encouragement.
And if we disagree with that, we can politely say so with why we disagree and what else can be done.
Thanks for sharing.
Advance Christmas wishes.
Very true.
Merry Christmas to you as well!
Thank you @isaria. :)
Spot on, dear. I love this list of example list. Thanks so much.
Thank you Rose.

good post and nice info..
thanks share @isaria
There need to be standard of meaning content. Steem would be filled with bots soon if there wasn't a good upvoting process and delegation process. Thank you for your posts.

Hello! even though I'm new here, I can say that I have stumbled upon these kinds of scenarios. true as you said. As for me, I am doing my best to really connect with people especially to this new environment. And commenting is one way of doing so. So far I've met a lot of wonderful people sharing their ideas which ignited our interests.
