Alright here we go...
So if we look at the graph there are a few trends we can see. The first is that since steemit's inception and now, the price has gone up. The second is that in the last two weeks steemit price rose dramatically. The third is that for the last few days the price has dropped a bit. Let's cross reference that with some other data.
Account creation has a strong relationship with price fluctuations.
Votes has a weak relationship with price fluctuations.
Posts+replies+edits has very weak relationship with price fluctuations.
Google trend has a strong relationship with price fluctuation.
If there is anything driving price fluctuations that we can surmize from this data it's that the rate of account creation has a fairly significant effect on price. This is a fact as far as I can see. Given this fact, the best thing we can do to drive the steemit economy into a successful future is have a higher rate of account creation. The creators have already made a great system. The early adopters are already generating great content and community. I think one day soon steemit has a chance at being on of those top social media icons people hyperlink in their youtube channel, or website, or sharing function. Pinterest and stumbleupon are great relatively recent examples new social media can emerge and become popular if it has that "special something" and I believe steemit has just that.
Right now things are looking really good. Steemit basically has a monopoly on it's platform. But it won't always be that way. It's too good a technology to stay that way. Already alot of mainstream social media like facebook and reddit are shiting their pants about this stuff, and having meetings about what to do (i.e. integrate something similar to their own platform). I think a good goal for steemit would be to get the name out there and get it to a point where its established enough that it can't really be challenged (like how reddit is now in it's niche for example). Mark my words, reddit will come out with something to rival steemit.
So I know that we all want to post on steemit and contribute, earn money etc. But we also need to help get the word out to others that might be interested. E-mail people we know who might be interested, bring it up in conversation, write about it or speak about it on our other social media. I for example have made a few videos about steemit on my [youtube channel](https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCmWIK9VTY9bCgBBoOAAKTUQ/videos). I learnt about steemit from a skype contact whose into cryptocurrency and illuminati tinfoil hat stuff :p Anyway here are my suggestions for steemit growth and in general:
1. Choose custom thumbnail picture option. The first image isn't always the best thumbnail.
2. Follow user list. We can follow users but we can't see a list of them, which kinda defeats the purpose.
3. Incentivize account creation. We have already done that with the credit on sign up and the 1.3 million$ injection. But that was a flash in the pan. We want account creation to continue to rise at an exponential rate or at least maintain a consistent rate. My basic idea to incentivize new account creation is referral credit. I can see two good ways of doing this.
a) For bloggers, social media, websites, forums etc you can have an "affiliate link" which leads to steemit signup. For all those who sign up through this link, the affiliate gets a reward in steem currency.
b) Ability to generate a code from your account that you can send to your friends. When you send this code to your friend, and they use it to sign up, then you got some commission as a referral.
I'm not sure exactly how this steem would be generated. I'm guessing that steem is generated "out of nowhere" when we post and vote, and so it could be done for referrals too. This idea worked really well for drop box. Drop box got like 75% of their new users from their referral plan where you got extra space when you refer someone. I think it would work even better than that because people have more need/use for a currency than for disk space.
Think about it for example if a youtuber like pewdiepie started using steemit. If he made a recommendation for it, it would get millions of views, tens of thousands of people would sign up. Having an "affiliate link" he could put in the description, he could get alot of currency from it, and the steem economy would grow. Everybody wins. This is just an example. The way it would really work is it would encourage everyday people to share it because it appeals to their selfish desires. We can use other social media and word of mouth to help steemit. The whole appeal of steemit is that you get money for posting. It only makes sense that rewarding users for advertising steemit will also work beautifully.

Thanks if you made this all the way through, let me know your thoughts.
OP, please tell me it's you in the last photo!
Also for the account creation and # of votes were down because STEEMIT GUI was down due to the DDOS attack and hack..
That's pewdiepie lol, not me. You are right the steam platform being down is an intervening variable. But the site has been back online for over 24 hours now and levels haven't risen to what they were at their peak... so I think there has been a genuine down turn.
Great post! Getting in right now and realizing the potential is so key. Millions of people are going to pore onto this platform shortly! Take a look at my post on why Steemit is going to bypass a Moon shot and go to Mars! Comparisons to mining and why the payouts are so high on the posts right now! https://steemit.com/steem/@brianphobos/the-top-reasons-steemit-will-bypass-the-moon-and-will-beat-nasa-and-spacex-to-mars-not-click-bait
Depends on your definition of shortly to be honest. Good things, even great things, take time.
