I UP-VOTE EVERY COMMENT ... FYI

VOTING EVERY COMMENT

I've made it a goal (at least for the time being) to VOTE on every decent REPLY that someone makes on my posts.

Informing My Friends and Followers
Not sure if people have caught onto that... so I'm just stating it here so you know. How many of you knew that I did this? (Super interested if you knew this)

MY VOTES VARY WILDLY

There really is no exact science to it the amount of the vote depends on...

  • How good the comment
  • How I want to CURATE my comment section
  • Where my voting power is at the moment
  • How many votes i'm planning on doing in the next 5-10 minutes
  • Pure randomness (helps buck expectations)

Heck my votes on comments are larger than many of my votes on people's posts... I figure this is my space and I want to reward my friends and improve my quality of life and enjoyment here on steemit.

The "Easy" way to interact

Yes I know replying to comments is the more typical social media way of fostering interaction... But sometimes it doesn't always happen. Heck sometimes I lack time or energy. But I've worked hard for the steem-power so now I get to enjoy the fruits of that labor.

A reply with my vote
I think a vote is a way of saying "Thanks" or "Noted"
I like to think one of the main foundations of STEEM is that we get to say THANKS and reward people a little extra with our votes. That I'm responding with my pocket-book (i did invest money into steem)

CURATING MY COMMENT SECTION

Not a lot of people vote on other people's comments (except for big trending posts) I myself love being able to move around comments on my posts putting some of my favorites at the top. Also if there is a Bot comment or a copy-pasted comment I love the fulfillment of being able to stuff it at the bottom. Anyone else love doing that?

REPLY MORE

This is also a goal... i'm not bad at it ... but I'm not good as I could. Early on steemit I was always impressed by how good people like @derekkind or @gringalicious were at replying.

MY QUESTION FOR YOU

I like upvoting comments and will likely continue for the forseeable future doing it... but here's a side question.

What does this mean to you?

Does it change your likelihood to comment or to improve your comments?

Also do you think people should vote on more comments more often?

Sort:

The easiest way to gain voting power is to buy $1000 to $2000 worth of steem dollars. and yes I upvote all comments, it seems like the right thing to do. Most enjoyable!

I feel that if a comment has some value to it, it should be upvoted.

Indeed... and for me right now for the time being I think that every comment has value just by existing. that's why i'm upvoting them all.

I like when people comment. I feel I get to know them better through their words and people can auto up vote a post and never have even looked at it.

Yes that's understandable. I'm also trying to comment more often as well.

Using a new interface for Steem that @asgarth has been creating may lead me to be better at commenting.

Haha, yes, I did the 'I upvote every comment thing' for a while too! Until I learned like @scottshots mentioned above that they turned into dust! I only used the upvotes as a visibility mechanism and so spammy comments did get lower on my comment list, but when I heard it was wasted VP I stopped. (Since I now have to use about 20% upvote for a 0.03$ upvote due to outstanding delegations...)

Anyway. There's this thing called 'Dustsweeper': https://steemit.com/contest/@soyrosa/a-project-every-newbie-should-know-about-dustsweeper - You give the project an SBD and it will automatically upvote 'dust' to 3 cents! Wh00h00!

From the maker I learned through my comments the following:

you get paid if it is $0.02 or higher... but when you look at your post or comment, you don't know if it is: ($0.015 to 0.019) or (2.0 to 0.024)... you will get paid on the 2.0 and above, but you won't get paid on the 0.019 and below (even if it shows 0.02)

The system rounds and that's the threshold $0.019 and lower turns into dust

Dustsweeper can now also be used to not only upvote your own payouts, but those of others too! You can give a fellow person a small amount of SBD so their payouts go above the dust treshold too: https://steemit.com/contest/@dustsweeper/dustsweeper-s-refer-a-friend-and-nominate-a-newbie-game

CC to @scottshots @themonkeyzuelans who were involved in the discussion above. Good luck with sweeping dust guys! :D

Thank you for the detailed explanation @soyrosa!

And by the way, since that's the original topic of your blog: I like people upvoting comments, but I have noticed it's not THE reason I comment on blogs. I comment when I feel there's a reciprocal relationship, I don't do 'fan comments' (I like some in return too, or else I don't feel like investing in the 'relationship' much).

I mostly upvote and comment who have left a comment on my blog, because I read comments on my blogs and then open their accounts. I go through those accounts tab by tab and if I see a post I like I open, read, upvote and comment it :-)

I do feel it's not a perfect strategy because I know a few people I LOVE to upvote and they are too busy to comment on my posts, but those I might catch late at night while I go through my feed spending some random upvotes on people I like - but they don't get a comment because I'm already in bed horizontally which is not an ideal typing position ;-)

More scotts on steemit please! Thank you! Love how you genuinely want to help everyone.

did not notice it. interesting way of picking the order of comments.
and yes @derekkind was incredible in replying and then he moved :)

I'm still incredible at replying, I just don't reply anymore. :)

Getting an upvote on comments I give does not change the likelihood that I will comment. Buy me a beer for every comment I give and maybe I'll try a little harder, haha! Seriously though. I also try to give a little upvote on all comments on my posts but I recently read (I think it was @soyrosa who mentioned it in the photogames discord) that if a comment gets less than a $.02 upvote, it gets cast off as "dust" and doesn't actually go to the commenter. This bummed me out as I feel I've been wasting a lot of voting power upvoting comments with .01 upvotes. My upvotes aren't worth a lot yet and giving out a bunch of .02 upvotes would drain my voting power fast. For now, I still try to reply to all comments and give a small upvote until I figure this all out...

I had no idea about that .02 thing. Where is this documented? Crazy... So does that mean .02 is still ok?

@soyrosa feel free to chime in! haha

Just signed up for @dustsweepers and giving it a test. It seems to be a way to increase the value of an upvote on a comment without draining voting power. Hopefully it works... https://steemit.com/community/@dustsweeper/ann-introducing-dustsweeper-a-new-service-to-turn-dust-into-profit

Edit:
Oh, wait a minute. It seems to work opposite of what I though. It's self serving and upvotes your comments that other's have upvoted less than .02 on, haha! My bad. We need a bot that does what I thought it did...

I'm still a bit lost. haha

Me too. I'm much better at being lost in the middle of the forest... Numbers hurt my brain but I'm trying, haha!

@scottshots and @soyrosa are totally right about this. Just like in the 0.01 and 0.02 posts, none of that ends up in the wallet. Not sure if that is documented somewhere but those maths are simple... Steemit uses just two decimals, and what you obtain from what your posts collects is 37.5% going to your wallet in SBD. So if you're going to reward a comment thinking that you actually want the user to be really SBD rewarded it should be at least 0.03 so it will end up being 0.01 on the wallet after 7 days. I was joking yesterday with @gabyoraa telling her that our vote is still just "a like".

I wonder how that varies as steem goes up and down in value. I'd still love to read more about this. Still seems odd.

About that, I have noticed that on most cases the posts under 1 SBD doesn't change with the market variations because of the same thing about the decimals. The market should change something like 10% up or down to modify 0.99 collected by a post. And 10% change on the steem value doesn't happen very often or that suddenly, it does happen (it just happened this week) but is not something that we (users) should count on.

Wait... .03!?!? I've been upvoting at .02 when I can lately, hahaha! One day I will understand but in the mean time, it's been fun trying to figure it all out.

Yep haha the payout from 0.02 is just 0.0075, so 0.00. Minimum vote that pays out is 0.03 that means a 0.01125 (0.01) payout.

Good to know and I'll lock it into my memory. Thank you!

my vote was more then i like for few weeks and now it is just a like again :D

I feel you, my upvote is like half thumb up right again haha

Well "a like" is probably not a thing on steemit but it still worth something for me... And for the rest of the social media society.

When I first read about the dust threshold I was a little bummed. Felt like I had wasted so much voting power on comments. After thinking about it though upvoting comments still makes sense to me just get the real comments above the bots and spam.

@timcliff suggested raising the threshold a while back. I can understand why a witness would want to reduce the spam comments but it's kind of depressing to people thats vote doesn't meet the threshold.

@jarvie here is the post that mentions how it works. https://steemit.com/steem/@timcliff/proposal-to-make-spam-less-profitable

Yes! Thank you @smawkward. I just spent over a half hour trying to find that info. I like your reason to still upvote comments.

I'm not sure why my brain associated @soyrosa with that info, I could swear she mentioned something about it in a discord but I couldn't find that conversation... Anyway @jarvie, that is what I am referring too and it makes me reconsider upvoting comments at .01 or sometimes less. But I still do because I've been trained for so many years by other social media sites to like, heart, and +1 all comments, haha!

i knew all this and that is why i don't upvote comments :) had no idea, thanks for the info

Crazy right? I still don't really get it all. But here's a small upvote anyway, haha!

0.002 :)

Hahaha, you're rich now!

As you said its way to tell them thank you for reading my post or so. Also it encourages communication and connection

Good initiative @jarvie, I wish more steemians aspired to it too :)
I try and do it as much as possible as well, except for the obvious spam comments.

Yeah that's true... i don't do spam bots

Yes it means a lot to us, especially for newbies because it shows that we are appreciated ...
When we newbies make comments on a post, that means they like or pay attention to the post or the person who made the post ...
Giving them upvote means mutual respect so that later newbies will be more eager to make a better and quality comment .....
Thank you dear @jarvie...

Oh no you didn't

I try to reply if it is good content. I do like what you are getting at. My vote is not much but I do sometimes vote a reply here and there and I think it would be good if more people did so. It is a way to show support, That you actually saw the comment and liked it.

Yeah saw it and put forth a finite and somewhat valuable resource towards what you did... showing that they care just a little bit more. haha

I don't think it changes my likelihood to comment. But its a nice gesture none the less. I would vote on a comment if its exceptional or is really engaging. As its does take time and I do appreciate that. No need to up-vote this comment ! I could not up-vote the post as its about to expire.

For the second question:
More frequent comments (provided the comments are good and qualified) mean more and more effort and attention ... more voting means greater rewards for such larger efforts....
People--who ever they are--tend to be want to be respected for their efforts...
Thank you

We did it!

Congratulations

You really try your best here on Steemit. Great job!
It is nice to show your followers and supporters a nice gesture with upvoting their comments, but in my opinion spam comments shouldent be rewarded.
I would also love to upvote each comment on my blog, but currently my steem power is too low. My goal for the future is to grow bigger and return something to the our beautiful Steemit community...
