STEEMIT Guide for Beginners

in #steemit7 years ago

I have meant to create an analytical beginner's steemit guide for a while now, but it has just been accomplished!

In this post you will find useful information about steemit and useful links where you can go to for greater analysis.

When I first 'landed' on steemit (but also before my registration) I was trying to read as much as I could, gathering information that were everywhere and it was time consuming as well as a bit frustrating.

The one thing I felt that was missing was information gathered together, instructions, a guide with all content items about this platform.

This guide has been structured based the initial guide by @indigoocean here
I made some changes and addition with a few of my links, translated it in Greek and now it is time to write it in English.

I hope you enjoy reading it and I hope it is clear and easy to navigate.

Welcome to steemit and I hope that you will enjoy yourselves here, while making the most of your time!

PART ONE (1): What is Steemit?

It is a blogging & social media platform. After your registration and after creating your profile, you have the ability to post images, blog posts, videos, to comment on other people's posts, to reply to other people comments, to upvote (like), to downvote (dislike)attention, to resteem (share), to follow other users and more.

Almost all your actions on steemit are rewarded with steem + steem dollars. However it should not be considered as a platform for a quick profit (not, unless you have a great amount to invest for buying steem in the first place). It requires devotion, content of good quality, time and you need to have a big community to support you by upvoting your blogs.

Steemit is still in beta, operates in a blockchain and is a promising, innovative idea constantly evolving.

PART TWO (2): What to do after creating an account

1. Quick Welcoming Guide

You are surely excited with your new account and perhaps you area already crafting your first blog post! However please take the time to study Steemit's Guide > Quick Start Guide

2. Security and Permission Keys

Pay extra attention to your codes, they have the access to your wallet! Read this useful article for your account security
Here you will find useful information regarding the different passwords

3. Make yourself comfortable!

Take some time and discover where everything is located. Check the tags, your blog, your replies, your wallet etc.

Here you can find a guide that shows what is where

4. Create your steemit profile

Read here instructions about how to easily create a nice profile!

5. Your first blog

Take some time to write your first post, which should be your 'introduce yourself' in the platform.
Read posts by new commers here. It is recommended that you have a photo with yourself + a paper with the date of your post.

6. Explore

Take the time to explore topics that you are interested in, while surfing steemit. You can upvote, comment, and choose the tag you wish (by clicking the steemit logo on the left.

PART THREE (3): Your strategy for making new friends and increase your rewards.

I will say it again. Steemit is NOT an ‘easy to get rich’ scheme! You cannot make lots of money if you do not devote time and produce useful content (it can be blogging about any topic, photos, stories, poets, guides, how-to etc etc)

1. Engage

After you see what the posts are all about (you will be surprised by the variety and quality), you can comment some of the posts that interest you. Follow users that post content you find interesting and engage. You will surely be entertained and learn many new things!

2. What you will blog about

Think about your topics. You can read here suggestions about

3. How to create appealing content

Steemit uses MarkDown for content. You insert images by dragging & dropping. Read Instructions & Tips

PART FOURTH (4): Etiquette & Guidelines

Steemit is a social network, and as such, it has its 'well behaviour' guidelines. There is no 'censorship' (with its strict meaning) but exactly due to the thousands of users from around the world, the bad behaviors are 'punished' while the good ones are rewarded.

Read here about steemit etiquette and if you want, please take a look below

PART FIRTH (5): Attention. There is NO privacy on the Blockchain. Everything is public and nothing is ever deleted.

Every action of yours is recorded. Every upvote, comment, post, transaction. In addition, anything that you publish cannot be deleted. I suggest attention with photographs or any personal information you publish (this is valid for all social media of course and any online information you publish)

Attention. Every action of yours on steemit, will reduce your bandwidth. This means that at least the first few weeks do not overdo it with extra (unnecessary actions) Read more here > Bandwidth

Everytime you upvote, your Voting Power will decrease by 2%. Read here about what voting power is

After writing a post, every upvote from every user equals rewards. The author receives 75% of the total amount 7 days after the publish and the rest 25% is distributed among the curators.

! You can only do edits to your posts before the posts pay out (7 days)

Read about rewards by @ilyastarar

Steemit community is very strict regarding 'plagiarism' and the content uploaded is of great improtance.

  • We can NOT just copy-paste articles, even if we have written them. We should always cite the source and accompany the posts with our point of view.
  • We are extra careful when uploading images from internet. We need to respect copyrights.
  • If we are not sure of something, it is best if we search in advance or ask someone.

Conclusion - Is it worth the time & efforts?

If the time and efforts are worth it, is a really personal point of view different for each one of us. For me, it is a platform that has helped me realize what blockchain is, how to enter the crypto-world, learn and develop something that I love doing (writing and research)

If you want, read my point of view about how to make the most out of steemit and let me know your thoughs below.

It is really important that we have the right expectation for every move we make. So we need to devote time for research and evaluation.

I've been annoyed lately with too much useless junk on steemit and it's getting harder to find good content and who to follow. You are one of the better ones on steemit and I suggest to all new and existing users to read this post. They'll learn something from it. Thank you!

Thank you for your kind words, they mean a lot to me.
I did not want to overload this one with info, people new here feel already overwhelmed (I still do myself sometimes!)
If anything is unanswered for you, feel free to reach out!
