A lot has changed since.
There are multiple curation guilds looking for good content to reward it and many whales also upvote posts from new users. Of course, authors who have a high reputation still earn a lot more with their posts, but they have worked for their reputation.
My advice for new users is not to look at the rewards on the trending page to much. Be happy with every penny you earn. It's free money :)

thank you sir for answering back , my only fear is that steemit goes bust other than I think I found something special and the money is just extra support :)
