This story was told to me by my friends grandpa, shortly before his untimely death at the young age of 52. It was told to him by his uncle, a deep-woods logger of the 1950's, 60's, and 70's, for the first time when he was around ten years old. He heard the story a few more times throughout the years before his uncle's passing.
The story is as follows:
The uncle was a deep-woods logger in the Washington, Oregon, and Northern California areas. During these times, they had many protesters who would venture out into the woods to try to stop them. They had many reasons to protest; the chopping of the trees, the pollution, but the main reason, was because of the endangered Spotted Owl, and the risk that the loggers posed to the owl's environment.
Because of these protesters, and the vandalism they would sometimes commit, it was common practice for the loggers to leave at least one crew member behind over night/weekends to guard the camp.
One particular morning, as they drove into camp in the dawning light, they saw something they could not believe. Their tractors and other heavy equipment were all turned over, flipped completely upside down. All of their 55 gallon drums of diesel fuel were thrown up into the trees. The entire campsite looked thrashed. And throughout all of this, the loggers kept saying to themselves,
"Well where's Billy? He was supposed to be guarding the camp! How could he have let this happen?"
No one at the time thought anything was particularly out of the ordinary, even given the extent of the damage. It would take an awful lot of man-power to flip over a tractor, let alone multiple tractors, and to throw the extremely heavy 55 gallon steel drums of diesel so high up into the trees that they were all stuck in the canopy. Nevertheless, no one thought a 'creature', let alone a Bigfoot, was to blame. The first and only thought that came to their minds was that it was the "damn protesters" and that Billy had utterly failed to either run them off, or adequately defend the campsite.
As they finished pulling into camp and parked in front of their deep-woods lodge, they still were discussing how many protesters it must have taken to have done this, and why didn't Billy do what he was left there to do. They had no idea the sight that awaited them inside the cabin.
They opened the door and went inside, and there was Billy, backed as tight as he can into the corner, shotgun in hand, pointed right at them, fresh shells strewn out of the box, at the ready to be loaded should need be. He was shaking badly from fear, and he yelled at the entering crew:
"It was Bigfoot, man! It was f**king Bigfoot!!"
He went on to tell them that in the middle of the night, while he was asleep, he was suddenly awakened to something pounding on the cabin, and deathly loud hooting and hollering. He got up and ran to the window, where he was met face to face with a Sasquatch creature, glaring in at him with a look that put the fear right into him. Through all the banging and hollering, he grabbed the shotgun, and tried to get it ready. He stole glances out the windows here and there, but ultimately, was too scared to even try to confront the creature, and retreated to the corner, where he slumped down, defeated, and remained there all night, shaking in fear.
From the quick glances he managed to get outside the window, and the noises he was hearing, he determined that it was a family of Sasquatch; a "Mom and Dad", and a "Daughter and Son". The mother/daughter were the ones pounding on the cabin/keeping him from coming outside, while the Dad/Son went and flipped over all the tractors and threw the diesel into the trees. The entire encounter lasted no longer then ten to fifteen minutes, and then they left, disappearing back into the deep woods from whence they came.
So make sure if you go out into the deep woods, especially at night, that you are prepared for what might be lurking out in the wilds. There's a Sasquatch out there, and it does not like us intruding/invading in it's already vastly dwindled habitat. If you're not careful, it might be you, who's next...
Great article!
love that story.. ! I've been interested in crypto(zoology) for a long time and there are so many global stories of bigfoot, skunkape, yeti, etc that i find it difficult to believe there's no definitive proof. they're proper spooky and makes me wonder if they're 100% real animal or some pyschic projection from the past.. or for some reason the authorities (everyhwere) have managed to keep them under wraps for lots of curious reasons.
These stories go back 100's of years and there are excellent stories from Canada, China and all over South America too. There's plenty of other weird cryptocreatures out there and some of the stories from deep in the African Jungles are really weird. I particularly like the plesiosaur stories and even a sighting of a horned (prehistoric whale) Pteradons and other life forms from the past..
now here's the weird bit.. I actually saw what looked exactly like a Pteradon about 12 years ago in Australia near the lighthouse at Clarkes Beach. I don't know what else it could be. It emerged from the clifftop forest and went in a straight line out to sea and disappeared over the horizon. I was quite amazed and when I started reading similar stories from all over the world I was a bit like WTF ?
and even more weird than that. a very good friend of mine lived in Tanzania when he was boy and he had a pet monkey which wasn't allowed in the house. It went missing one day so he went looking for it and when he got to the bottom of the garden, what reared up on the other side of the fence is something he'll never forget. Basically a long necked dinosaur looking creature.
The world is a strange place and I'm sure we don't know everything about it..
I did read a story once about an official project to catch a Bigfoot and it was very well organised and well resources with some of the world's best trackers and scientists going in search of the truth. After a few false starts and mishaps, so the story goes, they eventually caught one and took it back to a top secret government facility, where it promptly began to disappear spontaneously, apparently with the ability to walk through (very thick) walls and it all turned out to be a bit too weird and for that reason, perhaps we don't and will never know the truth about our odd cousins. Perhaps they are more like ghibli film characters. forest sprites.. albeit very big hairy ones.
I like the (feature film) TrollHunter for it's excellent CGI trolls but also on the theme of keeping crypto-creatures secret. filmed in a documentary style a group of young filmmmakers embark on an adventures with the Norweigan Trollhunter as he tracks down these mythical creatures in secret with government support as if they were a problem animal. Drawing on regional mythology it's a really thought provoking film.
One last thing.. and i really didn't mean to hijack your post here.. but I'm sure you'll find this all fascinating, I did an analyis of the famous Patterson film of a supposedly female bigfoot in a forest clearing.
Although it was said he admitted on his deathbed it was all a hoax (conveniently he can't un-say that now) I had a very close look and from my knowledge of anatomy, that's no costume. The muscles in the thigh work exactly as they should. It's not a human leg, more humanoid. they flex in a way not even the most exquisite costume could and I think if we've ever seen a bigfoot caught on film, that is it
post more crypto-creatures I'm following !
Thank you, I have stories of other creatures that have also been told to me by direct eye witnesses and/or first/second hand. I will be definitely be posting them soon.
It sounds like you would be interested in this book which is available for free online, I found it highly fascinating.

Thanks for that.. I'll take a look. I've read a zillion stories about crypto creatures but this place is more about the other crypto ! which is great cos it's just as fascinating.. will look out for your posts
