What is LBRY?
LBRY, or 'library', as its pronounced, is a video sharing platform like youtube that runs on blockchain tech. Like steemit, LBRY allows its users to publish content that they own, and charge for it using LBRY credits (or give it away for free).
From the LBRY website:
LBRY is the first digital marketplace to be controlled by the market’s participants rather than a corporation or other 3rd-party. It is the most open, fair, and efficient marketplace for digital goods ever created, with an incentive design encouraging it to become the most complete.
Where does LBRY have potential?
Video content creators who make pennies on Youtube and generate profits for advertisers can now take things into their own hands! This can be huge for course creators, independent film makers, vloggers, and just about anyone who makes valuable video content
Why use blockchain?
It is my understanding that the immutability of blockchain ensures the content creators that they have full control over their own content. Not even the developers of LBRY can censor or remove their content, except for in the case of piracy (not sure how this part works).
Get early access
The beta version of LBRY is not yet out, but will be released soon. You can sign up for early access using this link and will be among the first users when it is released.
Note that this is a referral link that earns me 5 LBRY credits when you sign up (and costs you nothing), so if you're interested and use it, thank you! Once you are signed up you will get your own referral link to share with friends. You can also buy LBRY credits on exchanges like Bittrex today.
Is this steemits sister platform?
There are plenty of differences between steemit and LBRY. Steemians don't have to pay to access content here, but the main similarity is that the content creators are in control of their income. No more middlemen using our content to profit! This is a step forward for the decentralized internet and I think the LBRY project has great potential, and will be complimentary to steemit! Check it out! Get early access and be one of the first users.
I don't think that paying for content will do the work here. Also it's kinda problematic to store that amount of data. It won't work in my opinion.
You might be right. My understanding of blockhain tech is still pretty low. Still I think any movement away from paying advertisers to paying content creators is a good one.
Idea to pay content createros is good.
But idea that you put and store any kind of data on blokchain is ridiculous.
Bitcoin has 1MB block size. You get new block every 10min. Most of the time this blocks weren't full. And now, after 8 years, we have 140GB of data. Now imagine you have no limit of block and u create block like every 1min and it's full of video.
Thanks this really cleared things up for me!! i thought it was a book sharing service lol
lol, I'm sure bookcoin is on its way
