I read a rather amusing meme yesterday which stated the following...
If you're forty something, enjoy your life now because the next generation who will pay for your retirement are all chasing Pokemon.
This latest announcement from the Museum of London however has got me thinking...
Am I inflexible, why do I find it hard to embrace change? After all, who didn't have a parent that disapproved of our trends as youngsters quoting that ago old line... "when I was your age". Can it really be that a Museum of all places is actually enticing people who have absolutely no interest in history and heritage to visit using such an inappropriate carrot? Like throwing a sausage into a room with a pack of hungry wolves lurking outside.
Genius marketing strategy?
The one sure thing is that the Museum will almost certainly attract new visitors and will almost certainly benefit financially from this new demographic of people but how likely are they to care about the actual exhibits? Granted, some people will stop and absorb the wealth of information around them but most are there with one thing in mind, GOTTA CATCH THEM ALL!
Also, would this not be a frustrating sight for the genuine museum goer who is there for a better understanding of London in days past and have only to walk the streets to see its present.
In conclusion,
Personally, I think it is a very inappropriate marriage of Knowledge and Social addiction much like it would be if you had Pokemon hotspots in a school for example. If you need to entice people to 'learn' by offering them a social drug then maybe they were not your customer to begin with.
