Is Steemit going to make Facebook BURN?

in #steemit7 years ago

Yes, I am the one who asked the Steemit panel during @steemfest 2 if Steemit is the social media that will make Facebook vanish!

In exact words, from a video @themonetaryfew took of me (but you can't see me really well, so I'm just going to quote) my question was:

'My question is not technical at all, it's very theoretical, none of us can predict the future, and it focuses on the social media aspect of Steemit. Also the answer is clearly very personal, maybe I should get an answer from everyone of you. DO YOU THINK STEEMIT IS GOING TO BE THE SOCIAL MEDIA THAT WILL CAUSE THE DEATH OF FACEBOOK, CONSIDERING THE GROWTH OF THE LAST YEAR AND A HALF?' [there was a mumbling from the audience and the panel at that point ;) ]

So, in other words, is that wake up call Steemit?

he thinks 'they serve different markets but the Steemit platform absolutely stands a really good chance of replacing these traditional one to 7 billion broadcast media because all the others are centralized.'Some of the developers answered immediately 'yes!' but @sneak elaborated a bit more by saying that [again, my video is really bad - I'm only a photographer, not a videographer unfortunately!!]

As they all agreed on, Facebook profits from you - you are the product, whereas in the Steem Eco System you profit from your work.

This reminded me of this picture I took at the LX Factory while visiting the Art Exhibition of SteemFest (Art at SteemFest) with @themonetaryfew and @mirjamsvideos :

but if Steemit keeps growing as fast, then this might not be an issue anymore. I mean, yeah, sure, I use messenger as most people, to communicate with friends and family, but I think that if everyone of them had Steemit I would never use Facebook EVER again. So, my personal opinion here, as a consumer and a user and not as a developer clearly, is that as it expands, the audience/market might change as well.At a small chat I had with @ned later on (who I got the impression that he doesn't like comparisons like that...), I did agree that probably the audience are indeed different,

As I have mentioned before, several times, I'm a newbie. To crypto, to Steemit, to everything that includes all that. ButSteemit the Future of all Social Media. Again, we can't predict the future, and I'm not some expert - I'm just offering a humble, personal opinion. But the way this thing is going, probably it's not totally out of place ;) the way I see it (ok, a little bit influenced by @creutzy and @themonetaryfew who are more into all that than me) Cryptocurrencies are the Future of our Economy which makes

the one and onlyWe had incredible fun at SteemFest2, but it wasn't all about the fun. It was incredible to hear most of the developers, including @sneak, @justinw and @roadscape and of course @ned sharing their views and chatting with all of us! Thank you guys!!!

I really think Steemit has big chances to become pretty influencial among the other social media platforms - however the purpose of these platforms are different.

For example, I use Facebook to connect with friends or people I've just met. I want to stay updated (briefly) with their whereabouts or any cool things they are sharing -- however catvideos really are taking it's toll.

When it comes to Steemit, I want to share my experiences more in detail. I put effort on my posts on purpose wheras on Facebook I put useless information as: Shannon is travelling to Lisbon from Berlin. Not so much useful for Steemit, but definitely something that is nice to have on Facebook.

Hey! I love cat videos :P ahahaha!!!
That is true, but wouldn't like being surrounded by quality, original content also on facebook and stop looking at posts repeating themselves and being super boring?
And yeah, I do the same on Facebook who am I kidding and who am I to judge but I would still love to see it burn and get into a new, less effortless social media Era! :D
Agree on the different purposes - certainly. The thing is though to see what happens if it grows more and how the initial purposes might shift... -if-...

I think facebook must to improvise and give payouts for every post like steemit. If not, facebook will rest in peace sooner.

That's what I'm thinking @rejacole - no pay? no deal... And also, it's not just about the money, it's about the content too. I'm done seeing shares and bs from every stupid page or website on Facebook. This is the real world, hardcore blogging, not just baby pictures or heart shaped profile picture frames...

Yeaap! Agree with you 👍🏻

From the choices..none of the above. As for replacing facebook, it will if the interface changes and be user-friendly..sooner than later.
Now..what is ur username on discord woman.
Teodora wants to call our room "steemcrazyness" am changing it to "steemcraze" lolsss

same as here girl, steemcraze sounds good ;DWe were talking with @ma1neEvent about improving and that with the current problems it probably won't be possible - but yeah, sooner than later ;)

need that 4 numbers beside ur name ;)

Nah, but it might replace Reddit (which is kinda shit anyway), or medium. It can also revolutionise the social media sphere, and maybe FB will change with it. I frankly want FB to die, it's just a shitty birthday reminder anyway

I didn't know what Reddit was before joining Steemit so I guess it has been replaced already :P
Haha we'll find you another birthday reminder app so you don't have to deal with Facebook anymore haha!!! ;)

Well, I dunno much about Reddit either, don't hang there, but I know it's used alot.
Yeah, I need a new birthday reminder app :)

I never got why - it's SO boring...[Reddit]

I dunno... I visited it only a few times because some searches led me to it, but I didn't stick around. It's a discussion forum. To me, it didn't look good, but I can see its use.

ah discussion forum - I didn't even get that, imagine, I was SO bored... Yeah, I guess it has a certain use but ... if you (and many others) didn't stick around...there must be a reason for it...

Yes, it's discussions. Someone starts a thread, and people reply. The one with most upvotes rises to the top. So it's good for polling and AMAs I guess. Though, they can be manipulated, but you get the idea :)

Steemit will not replace facebook by itself. Audiences are different and all that. Buy Steem blockchain when powered by SMT's will start a new era for many long predicted professional social communities that will drive trafgic away from it making it a place where mothers and grandmothers will interact with the facebook segment getting older and new generation joining other steem blockchain powered platforms instead of facebook.

Agreed! That's what I'm waiting for - that new era :)
I checked bescouted.com by the way, how awesome!!! I'll certainly join,as a photographer :D

It should make fb burn, because we rock ;)

that's the spirit @teodora !!! Hai haiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii :D

This is great!! i think it is the facebook killer!!!

haha nicely put @jasonrussell ;) Thanks! Were you in Lisbon too? If so, I missed you - if not, to the next one...it's gonna be huuuge !!!

No i didn't get to make it this year!! But we are definitely going to try next year!! I did have a couple pictures hanging at Art At Steemit!!

Next year it is then fellow artist Steemian !! :D

It's not the question is Steemit going to make F bur, @meanmommy33, but when :)

Exaaaactly @lighteye, that's my final point! :D

I am sure Steem won't be a real competitor for Facebook. Steem is really different from Facebook. But with Smart Media Tokens, we will see a lot of new projects and I am sure they have a chance to destroy facebook.

By 'Steem' you mean 'Steemit' @spiz0r? 'Cause let's not confuse the 2... I'm mostly talking about Steemit as a social media, and not as much as a crypto based platform (which it is, as well, clearly) SMTs sounded so cool at the Conferences so let's see what the Future holds!!!

I mean Steem the blockchain. Steemit is a simply frontend, but it doesn't really matter what UI you use (steemit, or chainbb or busy.org or dtube) or just reading and sending transactions on the blockchain.
I think for beating facebook you need a different blockchain platfrom with different rules and feautres. As I know it is possible with SMT.

Since I'm talking about the social media aspect of it though, for the general audience, who probably are unaware of cryptos and blockchains etc, I think it's more specific to say 'Steemit' - that's why I used this term and that's why I asked what you meant ;) Of course for us, that we are already part of it, it's much clearer what's what -but for someone who will eventually switch from Steemit to Facebook, I don't think it's that clear. It might be possible with SMT yes, so we just need to wait and see what happens (evil laugh hehe ;) )

As they all agreed on, Facebook profits from you - you are the product, whereas in the Steem Eco System you profit from your work.

The above and the fact that Steem is the biggest crypto currency right now both give Steemit and Steem a chance to be formidable for sure!
Most excellent post, I am hungry for such specific views of what happened at steemfest, thank you!

hehe thank you for web-being there !!! (That's the true Nature of Being then, @natureofbeing !! :D )

Wouldn't it be great! Seems like a long shot, but long shots do hit sometimes.

That's my point exactly... ;) :D Steem on to make it happen!!!

i thought like @sjennon about the purpose of different social media platforms. My disadvantage i'd never used one of the platforms actively because of their purpose often to just waste time with a simulated "socializing", not person to person. On Steemit the incentive driven culture motivates people to think before they unload something out of their brains and i think also can leverage someone to constantly learning instead of just pushing the first thought out about something or someone without further thinking.

But i think in the end FB is for the more spontaneous, sometimes senseless self directed presentation and on Steemit the most are here to create value for others. We have also many self directed content, but also that is incentivized for high quality because Steemit community rewarding with real money and not just fake likes and friends. And with creating value with such a multiplicator of hundreds thousands of people and soon millions it could simply overtake all the others because that's like a huge treasure chest for everyone worldwide, with much more valuable information than crappy things. This value proposition is in my opinion the biggest differentiator what drives Steemit much further than all the others.

To take it more on the philosophical and idealistic side it could even improve the overall knowledge worldwide additionally to just entertaining, blaming, tweeting, griping, shouting which is also possible on Steemit in the comment section or in thematic blogs. Finally you can upvote a simple cream tart with strawberries if you like it. It's your choice what's valuable. The only thing why others don't use such system is in my opinion greed to maximize earnings for only one and the reality was always disgusting for me, a gut feeling which kept me from using other platforms. That could a big reason for many to change their mind and join Steemit!

I really hope they will then!
Thanks for the amazing, elaborated comment! You used all the magic key words I had in mind when writing this... Think more...Value...Culture...High quality...Real money... I rest my case! Steemit has all that, that's why it should get on top of all other social media, eventually -and hopefully soon ;)

Excellent write up!
And loved the 4gag and the capture of Alice...
Are we really in wonderland :) ?

What is sure is that we are not in Kansas anymore...

I think we are, yes! That's how I feel...!!!
But yeah, Oz...we're far away from Kansas right now... ;)Thank you @nnnarvaez ;)
