It's not really that much of a mystery. You can see that the bulk of the power up yesterday was the @steemit2 account powering up to the @steemit account. That's just Steemit moving steem around in order to have enough steem power to delegate to new accounts.
Ah, you are completely right! So we can expect that these numbers will go down after the next hard fork :)
