Is Steemit a Young Frankenstein? My Devilish Experiment Will Show Us the Truth

in #steemit7 years ago

This video, here, is a test of how real Steemit is:

How? Why? What?!?

When I first discovered Steem, I was, like:

1 wow.jpg

(except I’m a boy…)

I saw some dude, some music dude, who’d posted his showcase vid, and, unlike Youtube, no nasty crazy stupid comments - instead, erudite, sophisticated, gentlemanly mini-tomes, extolling the virtues of his excellence.

And I be like, fuckin-A - this is my place.

But, the Sherlock Holmes in me took over. I clicked through…

And discovered...it was a fake, it was a fraud, it was a farce.

The dude had, like, 60 comments on his video here on Steem. The dude was rocking. The dude was trending.

But on Youtube I saw that the very same Youtube video posted in the top of his Steemit blog post had only three views!

So, people had been posting comments, “liking” it, etc., to get credits, Steem dollars, whatever...just another empty, fake, fraudulent place on the ‘net, it seemed.

But, to be sure, I’m doing my own experiment. If you comment below, please include in your comment the numeral equivalent of the square root of sixteen. Then I’ll know you read this far. And the video posted above - as of today - is UNLISTED on Youtube (I’ll list it later). So if I have 60 comments here about how wondrous my vid is, but six actual views on YT, I’ll know...the truth...and return to living in the real world...

I want Steem to be the place I've been searching for...where the internet is what it ought to be...I'm hopeful...but...we'll see...

Sort:

Vier, quatre, four, si quatro etc. Well it is true that if you are a hot steemian, you will get more votes than page views. It’s the bots voting on the blockchain without reading your article. Their motive is to game the system by milking the rewards from popular bloggers. By upvoting they share the rewards on the post. There is a whole science in when you should vote. Some say exactly 19 mins after posting. The bots take care of all this. It’s a big con.

Thise who are doing it claim they are supporting good writers whom they don’t have time to read. More bollocks and just another excuse to game the system.

Good writers realise they can now get votes without good content, and so are encouraged to increase quantity and reduce quality. It’s bad for Steemit.

Hi, Swissclive - Thank you for explaining this - I am not quite clever/knowledgeable about Steemit enough yet to fully comprehend your explanation - is anyone working on a way to un-game this?

It seems like such a relatively noble enterprise...it’s a shame that with only hundreds of thousand of users scammers are already taking over...

I'm not in this for the money, fortunately, except, sort of, in reverse. I don’t want to be a slave to Zuckerberg et al.

I find it baffling that people - billions of people - spend their days like serfs...no, slaves...(well, willing slaves) posting their photos on Instagram etc et al, in order to make investors in those companies rich. Why are you making strangers (most likely, strangers) billionaires? I guess most people, subconsciously at least, just want to be slaves. Why else?

On the other hand, video is expensive to host/stream, and on Youtube you can share in ad revenue - so that, as a surely inadvertent exception, seems relatively fair. But why would I write on Tumbler? Why post on Facebook?

So I came here to Steem to do try something that seemed, at least, fair, if not lucrative or enriching. But, now, you’re telling me that I’m making scammers and bot-makers money by posting here…

Geez….the internet, I understand, was a nice place before the invention of the WWW. Some guy is creating a new protocol called LBRY, which maybe will do what Steemit tries to do, as I understand it, but, maybe even better?

I dunno, I find it all kind of depressing….

But, thanks for replying to me!

the people u call scammers are people who are investing their time and money and effort into multiplying their wealth on this platform without having to be a slave to another human. what is wrong with that? who is stopping you from creating your own bot that votes on your stuff?

if you guys are interested in cons, you should look into how modern fiat currencies are created and managed and by who.

steemit is whatever u make it out to be. i am using it to do what i did in banking but using this automated crypto platform. some people use it for music etc.

from my studies, it shows that this platform offers great return on investment in terms of marketing and investment dollar.

do u prefer if you begged for likes or lady luck or some sharks in the music industry to promote your track for you? this platform gives you independence so u no longer have to be in a win-lose situation anymore nor codependent on others approval. it's great.

I watched the video 4 you.
Like every place where money is involved, steem also attracts the abusers, the begging people and the spammers. I don't think we can do anything against these people. But at least you can find open minded good people here.

I barely user steem now, but as I know the main problem is we need more manual curators to reward quality content. I used to be curate manually, but it is really hard and you don't get the reward for it. We need a system to reward manual curators against bots and autovoters.

4 :)

ahahah lovely

Four , 4. Hopefully Steemit will learn and correct some of the abuses when beta gives birth to the new and improved Steemit.

Yeah, math was never my strong suit. My best guess is 4 though. Yes, I believe that's right. I hope you continue to post and gain followers. Seems like you have something to say and share.

I just wrote a beautifully eloquent reply (if I do say so myself), but Steemit's steam seems to have run cold and dry (or whatever steam does when it runs out...) My post vanished in the ether.

Well, beta...

First, thank you for your reply. What else did I say? Hmm...Oh, yeah, I had I think two Youtube videos that trended, and both got the most psychopathically stupid comments you can imagine. Put me off posting anything online for six months.

Which brought to mind (in my original, much better reply) how culturally crazy it is that we view "box office grosses" - or Youtube views - as a sign of success, rather than...well, any other criterion.

I have this feeling that on Steemit the level of...betterness?...is somewhat higher than most places online...which is why I may, possibly, only post here, eventually.

On that note, what I can't work out is an hour after posting that vid on Youtube I have 667 views, but no comments and only one like - which would imply the views are coming from Steemit, except it says here only six people have viewed this post. So, who knows....Not that I SHOULD care about eyeballs versus...anything else (everything else) (But I still, secretly, do...well, not really secret if posted here, but...)

I enjoy your writing and comments. It's a fresh view and welcome. Yes, when I post it's mainly just for me. I post what I want and if people like it that's a bonus to the old ego, if they don't enjoy it, well that's okay too because I liked it. I realized this last week when I started. That I needed to just make me happy. Can't please everyone, so I'll just please myself. Have a great day!

Four! A wicked slice on Steemit at times is a definite. Hopefully, the folks in charge of this site work out their swing plane issues:D

I just came across your post and really enjoyed it. Thanks (UPV&FOL) :)

I love to find like-minded posts from like-minded people and to interact with their posts. The personalities of everyone on this site makes it truly unique. The people that game the system have the opportunity to take advantage of this fact.

I think it is neat that if there is a will to make money, there is a way to make money. I fear that the personalities of people on this site will be overtaken by the people that are trying to wring out cash for posts.

This may be a deterrent to some people that are just starting like myself, not making much on my posts, if anything. It bothers me because I take time and effort in my posts, and I still don't receive the interaction of my posts as I hoped for.

You brought this issue forward, and for that you have earned a resteem and a follow.

Congratulations @muzikifi! You received a personal award!
