DIARRHOEA NUTRITIONAL MANAGEMENT
Diarrhoea is having three or more liquid bowel movements per day. Usually this is caused by intestinal infections. These infections are usually from contaminated food and water. It can also go from person to another.
Dietary precautions can manage diarrhoea, this is shown by studies.
Diet for management of diarrhoea
Children who are still breast fed should receive large amounts of milk from their respective mothers. High amount of calcium in breast milk will help reduce and eradicate the infection in the intestines. It can also prevent bone diseases from attacking a child. Therefore breastfeeding for those who do should be continued and it is highly recommended.
Protein and carbohydrate intake should be increased in those suffering from diarrhoea. This will help increase the energy levels in the body as nutrients are heavily lost in diseases such as diarrhoea. Substances that are not completely digested in the event of diarrhoea such as fibre and fats should be discontinued immediately. High levels of iron and calcium should also be taken in as the absorption of these is greatly decreased when having diarrhoea which makes it more severe.
Ingesting a lot of fluids and eating frequently is also highly recommended when having diarrhoea. Any fluid can be taken in but juices, as they make diarrhoea worse.
Nutritional management of diarrhoea advantages
People do not have to go to the health facilities to seek for help. A lot of money is saved because there is no transport needed and also time. No medication is needed for diarrhoea treatment.
