I have been thinking on these lines too. Expectations seem to be skewed for many who give up after not earning anything in their few posts. I personally thought community building will address that and did something about it. But though I got a good payout, and a lot of whales voted, I was disappointed when that post got only 100 votes. I had thought that any effort to build the community will be appreciated and I would get votes from the everyone as appreciation, even if their votes counted for nothing. But quickly realized that nobody votes if they like a post or to encourage community building, they vote if it has potential to go viral!
This is a worrying trend which goes against the reasoning behind steemit and the countless posts I have read regarding where we are headed. And as you have rightly pointed out, the active members shown is alarmingly small compared to accounts opened, and such discussions are welcome as it is about time we woke up to this fact and realize, community building is an important aspect of building the ideal platform.
