Help! What's the advantage of Blockchain-driven Steemit over e.g. Reddit?

Recently I had a conversation with a friend and I was trying to sell him the advantages of Steemit over classical forums such as Reddit. Of course I mentioned that you can earn money with it and that Steemit is based on the Blockchain.

My plea, however, didn't convince my friend. He replied that Reddit could also introduce a reward system and that therefore, he doesn't see any advantage of Steemit over Reddit.

I tried to argue with the Blockchain, but at that point I realized, that I don't know enough about it and so I decided to put the question in here: what advantage does the use of Blockchain give Steemit over, say, Reddit?

Couldn't we just use a normal database like MySQL? Why Blockchain?

Any help would be really appreciated :)

It is more about what the Blockchain CANNOT do, than what it can.
The Blockchain(eg Steem) cannot hide its decisions or decision-making process from the public.

  • If Steem owners want to make large changes to Steem, they will need to back the decision with large amounts of publicly identifiable Steem(shares).

  • If Reddit owners want to make large changes to Reddit, they only need own the asset known as reddit.com domain name.
(and perhaps the ssl token that goes with that; but SteemIt.com must own this as well as large amounts of Steem/Power)

Thank you for that answer. So basically, this means that Steemit is like a cooperative, where users make decisions upon changes being made to the platform?

For the most part... yes, the owners do have some need to run things by the community before they can implement without issue.
Granted, if you check out https://steemwhales.com/ you will see the owners(eg. steemit) control most shares anyways....
Side note: in the event Steem owners disagree a blockchain fork will be imminent, the outcome will be a new duplicate of Steem like the Russian version: https://golos.io/
I actually have an account with them...

I have no real answer but would like to hear one.

I think Reddit is mostly helping in different sectors. And to find answers to questions.
Steemit is more like a Community. There are posts with just people they like something and want to share it with other persons.

right, you have a point here!

It looks like no matter what you will say he will answer that reddit could also implement that.

Of course they could also implement the Blockchain. But what's the advantage of Blockchain? That's the heart of my question. What can Blockchain do, what other technologies can't? What separates a Blockchain Reddit from a normal Reddit?

Reddit can do whatever it wants for example it decided to close its code.

Creating a blockchain isnt like implementing reward systems like WalGreens or Target do. It is a complete technology with a currency designed to compensate people running the chain. While it is getting easier to implement, there are a ton of coins out there that have no value.

Plus, Reddit has no incentive to offer"rewards" to people. They are a centralized system with the value contained in that model. That would start to devalue the existing entity. The common factor among disruptive technologies is that the ones affected do not realize it until it is too late. Steemit is nothing at the moment with only 300K visitors. Most of the posts on this site, from what I have seen, are people posting youtube videos and MEMES. So far, the real information is limited. I am hoping that will change. Reddit will only be aware of Steemit after a mass migration takes place.

And that is why you wont see a blockchains compensation system on Reddit. They will fade away like MySpace before that happens.

Ok, thank you. Correct me I've I wrong, but basically you say that the main advantage of Blockchain is

  1. It's a ready technology and easy to implement
  2. The rewards are of value outside of Steemit

However, I'm not sure if this is something which is unique to Blockchain. You see, I won't to make a plea in favor of Blockchain and platforms like Steemit.
