How to vote on Steemit and some wrong ideas about voting

I am going to clear some incorrect opnions about the voting system of Steemit. For example:

  1. You should vote from minute 20 to minute 30.
  2. You should always be the one to vote for your post first.
  3. Your curation reward will depend on the value of the main post.
    ...

I have spent 2 weeks reading and using (Steem-Python)[steem.readthedocs.io]. For anyone who doesn't know about Steem Python, this is the official API for programmers and developers to develop Steem system.

Here is how the voting system work:

  • If you vote from minute 0 to minute 30, your curation reward will be penalized. For example, if you vote from minute 25 and the curation reward for you is 1 SBD. What you would get is: 1 * 25 / 30 = 0.833 SBD.

  • If you vote from minute 30, you will get the full reward.

  • Therefore you should always vote from minute 30. After that, you will ALWAYS get the full reward no matter you vote from 2 hours or 5 days

Don't hesitate to vote for OLD POSTs because you will always get full rewards.

Curation reward

  • Your curation reward depends ONLY on your VOTING POWER, your STEEM POWER and your VOTING TIME, and the voting percentage also (if you have more than 500 SP, you will be able to divide your vote)

  • Therefore no matter the post is 0.02 SBD or 100 SBD, your reward will always be the same after minute 30. You cannot expect to get more than that. Other reward of the post will go to the ones who have more SP power than you.

For example, I have 15 SP now and 100% voting power. The reward for my vote is only 0.001 SBD.

Don't try to look for high-value posts to vote just for a better reward. You will always get the SAME REWARD.

Because of that, whether you vote for your post first or not, it DOESN'T MATTER, when you vote first, you even get into the first 30 minutes and you will not get the full reward.

You will always have to share 25% for the CURATION REWARD.

The strategy is:

  • Vote when your voting power is as high as possible. Visit steemd for that information.
  • Vote after minute 30.

I will show you a clear example about the voting system on the next post.

...damn it.

@pexea12, Contribution to open source project, I like you and upvote.

Will I get the same reward even if more people vote for it before I do? If I'm the only one voting for posts, that are at least 30 minutes old, then I get the whole reward, but if one person voted before me, then what happens? And if ther are 100 people that voted before you, then what? But you are supposed to get a percentage of the total from the whole thing. So, some posts is worth maybe no money or maybe $1. But some posts are worth over $1,000 and how is that divided among everybody that voted exactly because one person may get more than what they normally would get if they were the only one that voted because of how big and trending the post is.

Sure because the rewards you get come from the voters.

The post worths 1000$ that means a lot of people vote for the post. Who votes more will get more. The curation reward is divided to the voters with the same rate as whaat they vote for.

Therefore, you still get the same reward if you vote for the post.

But I was told you also get paid more if more people voted on it because more people voted for it and because if you voted for it first, then you would get more since you were betting on the winning horse so to speak. There are people that say this on Steemit. What you say seems to go against what seemed to be the popular view that betting on the winning horse is rewarded to an extent at some small percentage beyond just your own voting power limit.

Betting on the winning horse so to speak should get you something extra. That is what some people on Steemit said it seems or so I thought. If there is no extra percentage pool for getting in before others, than what is the point of voting before others? Is their no advantage of voting before others?

Well, looking at the source code, I don' see any sign of bonus reward for betting on the right horse.

Voting rewards are calculated based on rshares. And rshares are calculated based on your VESTS (steem power), your voting power and your voting percentage.

Maybe it is just a rumor and anyone believes in it.

Oh, maybe I have details twisted in my head. So, you may not get rewarded more money for betting on bigger horses so to speak.... you are probably right with the rewards, but are you not rewarded more reputation which then in turn could help you get more VESTS later on maybe directly or indirectly..... because of how reputation grows???? And more reputation could at least mean some may upvote you more if your reputation is a bigger number which then leads you to getting more money later on because of how reputation can encourage people to throw money at you more so than to throw money on somebody with a reputation of like 12 or -4 for example, right?

Reputation is another story which I haven't read much about.

But for the curation rewards, that is all the facts. That's why I wrote this article to clear some misleading concepts and rumors.

Reputation and curation have to intersect.

Welcome to Steemit! Hope to see some content made specifically for the community here.

Thanks for the tips!

Good post, funny picture 🤗

since voting on posts past payout doesn't deplete voting-power... why not spam vote shittons of old posts and comments in an attempt to get other people's attention for free?!

dude... it's brilliant, I mean here I am, giving you attention... but it's also fucking annoying and really just op-spam on the chain.

In the end I am not sure if it brings you the kind of attention you'd want.
