Actually, thinking about this a bit more made me feel like I got your point.
And let me say that your perception is wrong.
The rewards are distributed by the community as a whole. During the payout period, what's displayed is not yours. The value can change by many reasons - price fluctuation, upvotes for others, or downvotes for you. The period is used to find a community consensus on the payouts. It's not in your pocket, but in escrow (the pool, managed by the community). It gets finalized during that (currently 7 day) timespan, and you're able to claim it at the end. Only then it's yours.
