Value Added or Copypasta on SteemIt? You decide!

in #steemit8 years ago (edited)

Edit: @imthejckl has since added his thoughts on the trailer and the movie it advertises. Personally, I think this improved the article a great deal.

Please also note that this article isn't meant to single out any particular user. He just happened to be the first user who was willing to have this debate with me.

Hello fellow Steemians! I just had an interesting debate with @imthejckl. I'd like you guys to weigh in the comments below. His article Trust Disrupted: Bitcoin and the Blockchain trailer is simply a YouTube link and copypasta of the video's description. No formatting. No commentary.
I left this comment:

Isn't this copyrighted by TechCrunch?

Edit: I suppose it's an ad, so they won't actually care. But, is this really what we want SteemIt to turn into: repostings from other sites? Personally, I'd rather to see value added. What are your opinions on the ad? What impact do you foresee it having? Etc.

I made this comment because I, personally:
① want to see SteemIt stand on it's own merits
② therefore, want all content to have some value added to any reposted content
③ spend the time to make sure that my reposted & modified content is properly attributed
③ spend even more time collecting media that is either, rights free (CC0), CC Share Alike, labeled for reuse, labeled for reuse with modification, or I ask permission from the original content creator (they always reply within a day and always have agreed)
④ am genuinely interested in why a person might think that thing is worth sharing.

Now, I freely admit in my Introduction/Verification article that I can unintentionally come across as brusque. For that I apologize. I don't know when I'm doing it and when I'm not. When I criticize an idea or a work, it's to make future works better. Nothing is ever perfect, and I would hope that others can help me reach toward perfection my pointing out flaws in my ideas and works. Unfortunately, only some people appreciate this approach. Others take a critique of their work as an attack on their nature as a human being. Again, I apologize that my words have brought any consternation, @imthejckl.

Before reading the below conversation please note. This is not posted to instigate personal controversy or drama. Please refrain from personal attacks against either of us. This is meant to be a debate of ideas. Secondly, while each line is an exact quote, this is not the precise order in which everything was said. It has been reordered to improve readability and to remove content irrelevant to the ad rem debate. If you'd like to read the entire conversation, it can be found here.

lol @RubelliteFae you have been on steemit for 2 months and you call out people reposting content that is MEANT to be reposted GG mate

RubelliteFae
Perhaps I've misunderstood copyright laws and the type of content that's meant to be on SteemIt. Please educate me rather than chiding me.
Also, I've only been active 2 weeks.
I was heavily warned to cite things and make them my own.

imthejckl
which is why the post is references (By which he means, there is a link back to the original video, not citation.)

RubelliteFae
If I link to a Disney movie and say, "Disney made this, not me." Should I get paid for it?

imthejckl
you yourself wrote that you knew its different
this is the trailer, which is DESIGNED to be shared
👍 1 (I used this to indicate I ceded the point that content creators want trailers to be shared, but not the point that content creators want the sharer to get paid for doing so. Many words were exchanged quickly, so I didn't have a chance to come back to this point.)

RubelliteFae
I also wrote that I'd prefer to see value added. I can find the ad on YT by myself

imthejckl
when you upvote content, more people see it,
if I did not tell you about it, you would have not known
so the post worked

RubelliteFae
If I hadn't posted my comment, we wouldn't be having this philosophical conversation about the purpose and intention of SteemIt
I didn't flag your post (as he did my comment), by the way, I added value by initiating a discussion in the comments.

imthejckl
Yes, you are incorrect

for your perusal

RubelliteFae
For further, clearer edification, is there a particular word or phrase I should be searching for?
And... just to be clear, I never intended to diminish your value as a human being or even as a SteemIt contributor.
I try to keep my criticism ad rem, not ad hominem.
So, please don't take offense. Ideas are meant to be discussed and improved.

Thanks!

if you have a look over my profile, you'll find 90% of my work is original

RubelliteFae
I wasn't criticizing your other work or your body of work. I was asking legitimate questions about that specific article.

imthejckl
but I believe this video is quite important
and was sharing for awareness

RubelliteFae
As I said in the comment, I would have liked to seen some mention of why you thought this film and/or ad was important.
This is what I want to delve deeper into when I see a post

imthejckl
there is not much more to be said on a trailer
but when the video comes out I will definitely deep dive into more of the content inthe video
however, as I said, and the whitepaper says "A source of curated news and commentary." this is news, its important

RubelliteFae

A source of curated news and commentary.
not
A source of curated news or commentary.

imthejckl
"But, is this really what we want SteemIt to turn into: repostings from other sites?"
this
your attempt to derail my post, is an attack

RubelliteFae
An attack on the idea, not an attack on you as a human being

imthejckl
if you would like to start that topic, do it on your own post
I took no exception to the rest of the comment

RubelliteFae
I shall do so! 😄

Below I will make a comment for both sides of this debate. Please vote on the one you agree with and add why as a reply. I know SteemIt is still finding itself as a community and discussions like this are better had early on, don't you think?

Opinion 2

I want to see original, thoughtful content on SteemIt. Thoughtful articles take more time, so only content creators should be financially rewarded.

Upvoted. This sort of thing needs to be shut down distinctly before it becomes a thing. You can use external sources, of course, but you must add something. Otherwise it's digital bootlegging that discourages actual new content. In other words, if I see someone simply reposting something from somewhere else and making coin... what incentive do I have to make original content?

I voted Op2 because "the issue is that news sans commentary takes seconds to post and well-researched articles take hours. If 'articles' such as this are accepted, over a long enough period of time these kinds of posts will outnumber think pieces, art, stories, and the like... because it's 'easy money.'"

Opinion 3

I believe in an alternative solution. (Please comment below.)

I think reposted/linked news with commentary has value, but not as high value in general. If I consider that something adds some value, I would like to use a vote slider, which I don´t yet have, and give it let´s say a 5 percent vote. While I would give a good original article a hundred percent vote.
If others do the same, then the incentive for easy money might disappear.
Also, I only reward people for news that I´m not aware of, and I´m aware of a lot.

So in order for me to find value, the person needs to dig up interesting news, from a site that I don´t know about, or haven´t checked lately, and provide some additional reflection, or connect it with other facts.
This could be quite valuable, and this is how news are made every day.
There is a grey area here. Provide one or two sentences, and it hardly looks like more than reposted content. !0 sentences and it´s starting to look like an article.
It´s up to us to decide what is good enough to reward.

This is great! You've changed my mind.

I´m happy to be of help. And I really appreciate your rational, objective mind.

Opinion 1

I want to see news from external sources on SteemIt. Reddit became popular by letting people do this. People who post breaking news should be financially rewarded for doing so.

I don't believe this should stand on its own, while I vote for opinion 2, I believe opinion 1 has merit as curated news is important.

Side comments:
If I was out of line and being a bitch in my initial comment, please tell me here what specifically was bitchy so I don't repeat such mistakes in future. I genuinely want to be as kind as I can to people while still pushing them to improve themselves—which I personally see as one of the kindest things one can do for an individual and society as a whole. Please push me to be a better me!✨
