I notice that many of the people I talk to who are just getting on Steemit are wondering what type of content to post. With many platforms there's a certain culture or certain type of content that gets posted more than other stuff. Youtube is pretty diverse but a site like VidMe for example is heavily geared towards gaming and animation.
I feel like Steemit has a pretty diverse selection of content, everything from homesteading to gaming to current events to various people's hobbies and interests.
I enjoy all types of content on Steemit but decided I'd make a post giving some examples of content I tend to consume on Reddit and Youtube and if anyone out there is looking for types of content to make or content ideas here's a few I'd probably enjoy checking out and which will probably earn an upvote from me.
10 Content Ideas & Types of Content I'll Probably Upvote
1. Documentaries
I'm a sucker for weird obscure documentaries. My girlfriend often tells me I'll watch anything lol. I especially like adventure documentaries, a recent one I watched was called the Barkley Marathon about this 100 mile race through hills and mountains and brush. I really like sailing documentaries like "Chasing Bubbles" or "8 And One Dog" or "Hold Fast". Another kind of wierd or obscure one I watched recently was "The Parking Lot" about some dudes who work in a paid parking lot. I love wierd documentaries and would love to see a documentary maker come on here and post some content, even short form documentaries.
2. Motivational & Inspirational Stuff
I'm very into the self improvement space things like Les Brown, Jim Rohn, Art Williams, even compilations of motivational speeches and things like that turned into a video. I love stuff like this and it's sure to earn an upvote from me.
3. Stories About People Hitting The Reset Button On Life
Right now in my life I'm doing some self assessment kind of asking myself questions like am I happy with what I'm doing with my life? Why am I living where I'm living, should I get out and explore and experience more. I've seen some really interesting posts on here about people who've quit thier jobs and lived out of a van for a year, traveled, moved to the wilderness and lived off the grid. Doesn't even necessarily have to be anything that extreme, could be leaving a job and moving across the country to a new area, basically just looking for stories from people who have had the balls to make a dramatic shift in their life or lifestyle, I'd love to hear some of those stories.
4. Stocks, Personal Finance, Cryptocurrencies and Investing
On Reddit I spend a lot of time in the subreddits about cryptos, personal finance, investing, stocks, etc. Whether it be reviews of platforms like Lending Club or Prosper or Wealthfront or Betterment. Personal finance tips, stock picks. I enjoy this type of content and it's likely to earn an upvote from me.
5. Hobbies, Introducing People To Your Hobbies
I have a tendency to get quick obsessions with hobbies. Some of them stick around for the long term while others are things I just find fascinating, research 24/7 for weeks and never actually take up but enjoy hearing about them. This could be anything from gardening to glass blowing to throwing pottery to wood working. Do you have a hobby? Do you create something? Are you into rockclimbing or bouldering or sailing? I love hearing about people's hobbies and would like to see more of this.
6. How To Videos
How to videos for most people are probably more practical than entertaining ie how to hang outdoor lights at your house, how to build a deck, how to do just about anything. Not only are they practical but as someone who's curious about a lot of different stuff I actually find them both educational and entertaining. If you make a video about how to do anything I'm likely to watch it.
7. Content About Different Cultures (Sociology)
There's a ton of interesting cultures around the world. I remember recently reading an article about this culture in the Sierra Madre mountains of Mexico and like every person young and old, man and women are all long distance runners. They can run a marathon or two in a day like nothing. There's tons of different and very interesting cultures thorughout the world and I love learning about them.
8. Steemit Education & How To's
I'm about 20 days in on Steemit but learning more and more every day I'm on here. I now this site is currently experiencing a huge influx in it's userbase and I'm sure many other people don't know how to do things like post photos, how to structure posts, how to convert steem to steem power, how to power up, how to power down. Basically would like to see posts teaching myself and others how to do stuff on this platform.
9. Business & Entrepreneurship
I think in this day and age it's important everyone have multiple streams of income. It doesn't matter if you view yourself as an Entrepreneur or not, I think having multiple streams of income is the key to the future and also the key to financial security. I love business and entrepreneurship, everything from publishing books, creating digital courses, affiliate marketing, Amazon Merch, eCommerce. This is what I do for a living and what my Youtube channel is about but I like keeping on the cutting edge of new trends and opportuntiies and love consuming this type of content. Make good content in this niche and you're sure to get an upvote from me.
10. Travel Content
I've seen some great travel adventures posted here on Steemit and enjoy consuming this type of content on Reddit and Youtube as well. Have you traveled to an interesting place? Do you want to take us on a tour of your city or maybe some park or natural wonder in your area? I love watching and reading about this type of stuff and it's likely to get an upvote from me.
Wrapping Up
Anyhow, if any of you Steemians are at a loss of what type of content to create hopefully the above list gives you some ideas of things I'm personally into and would like to see and I would imagine there's probably more people out there like me. If you're looking for some ideas there's maybe a place to start.
it really helped to me and also motivated me.
The Barkley marathon documentary was great! One not so well known documentary I found really enjoyable is: A complete history of my sexual failures. It's a self documented story of a guy (kind of a loser) who is trying to figure out why is still single even though he has dated a ton of girls...very funny!
Hey @thephotoguide I've seen that one online and actually have it on my watch list but hadn't checked it out yet. Another kind of crazy one is "Shutup Little Man" it's about these young guys who moved into a dumpy apartment next to two alcoholic crazy guys and they recorded all their arguments through the wall. It's pretty insane.
Do you have any other suggestions for interesting off the wall documentaries? I'm a documentary junky.
That does sound insane, but very interesting! Hmm it's hard to think of one from the top of my head... two come to mind though:
Indie Game: the movie, an emotional rollercoaster portraying the life of indie game developers who sacrifice everything to finish their games against all odds.
The King of Kong: a fistfull of quarters, an insane competition between two ultimate rivals to get the highest score ever on the classic donkey kong arcade game. So intense that youll find yourself having trouble figuring out who's side your on constantly
Hey thanks for the suggestions I'll check them out. You kind of gave me an idea, there's so many great wierd little documentaries that fly under the radar, I may try to start doing a weekly series with my favorite documentaries available on Youtube or something like that or the best adventure documentaries, something along those lines.
Thats awesome! Would be a must-read for me...following you to stay updated!
Great suggestions. ..thanks:) :)
Well done again. I hope to be able to make the list occasionally with the content plan I have. One thing I'd like to do is interview entrepreneurs who have busted a myth here and there by doing something unusual or against the odds in some way. I'd love to interview you sometime if you're game. Just let me know.
Thanks.
Hey buddy very cool idea, I'd love to do something like that. Let me know. In addition to getting in on the ground floor of something and hopefully earning some money that's actually kind of why I'm doing Steemit and Amazon Merch in part.
Both these things are things outside of my normal strengths and things which my Youtube following and past businesses won't really do much to benefit me on. I'm not a great graphic designer in terms of merch and in terms of steemit I'm starting at the bottom as well. I know sometimes when I watch guys on Youtube it's easy to fall into the mentality of it's easy for them because they are already established so I'm hoping to be successful on both platforms to kind of show hey guys I'm starting from the bottom and I'm gonna build this up right in front of your eyes, you can do it too type of deal.
I know for sure you're going to kill it here. That's why I want to interview you!
I'll try to find a way to contact you directly to set something up. I'm sure you have a contact link somewhere. You can also reach me directly through a temp page I setup at bigfatmyths.com. There's a contact form there. Thanks. Looking forward to letting folks inside your head a little bit.
Just hit up your contact page. Looking forward to it.
Ohhh is there ever a rabbit hole of good documentaries on YouTube on ponzi schemes, huge scams, and cons lol.
There is also a really cool sounding (haven't watched it yet) documentary on the Pacific Crest Trail. After coming across the wikipedia page and then researching from there, it sounds awesome, I'd love to just drop everything and spend 5 months doing the Pacific Crest Trail and eventually complete the triple crown of hiking. The PCT looks amazing and goes from mexico border to a national park in Canada traveling over some very beautiful terrain.
Boy is there ever a rabbit hole of docs. I left my job about two years ago to work for myself but prior to that my job at the time had a ton of downtime so probably 6 hours of my 8 hour work day I had Youtube docs playing in the background. I can tell you a little about almost anything lol.
haha yes! It's great background noise for writing and researching, and if I'm ever on a trivia show it can't hurt!
@rulesforrebels I just watched your youtube video "5 days on Steemit/Initial impressions and my earnings" watching it lead me to your page. I am following friends, influencial and people who inspire me and I can learn from. Although I started less than 2 weeks ago I am still learning, hence I dont take for granted anything, all matters to me. With that said I endurse the categories you have here as those are all my inerest If you look at my "about status" despite having just a few post I intend to cover all these categories very soon. Great post you have here.
I'm just planning to do an introduction post and wasn't sure if type of content I'm planning to do will fit on this platform, so it really helped me to make a decision since my plan is to cover topics from 2 to 5 in your list (: ↑vote
