Being new to steem I got caught up in the follow me follow you trend and ended up with close to 500 on my followed list, which basically made my feed useless. (Many were just spammers posting garbage multiple times per hour, blatant plagiarism etc)
Faced with the daunting task of sifting through all that I ended up just removing everyone from my following list and have started over, ideally I only want to follow those that I will regularly upvote either because I like their content or because they have supported me.
I don't have much time to go searching through the new / hot section and would rather use what little time & voting power I have day to day just voting on my feed.
Should I be following and upvoting you?
Let me know in the comments as I like supporting undervalued / unnoticed users.
Thanks again to those who have supported me, I'm slowly following people who upvote me and leave substantial comments etc... as well as people who's content I like as stated above.

Yeah...follow4follow strategy is the worst there is lol, and only brings for crappy spammers... This is a good step ;)

To be honest, I tend to follow people who are committed to post good content. The frequency does not matter to much for me. I don't upvote people because they asked me to and I don't follow people who ask me. I'm a classy gal, you need to win me over ;)

I have the same strategy. Only follow people with great content. I doubt if I ever follow more than 150-200 people.
When my feed is empty and I have time for reading, then I also visit Hot, Promoted and Trending tabs.
You can follow me, because I am going to write only great content in my blog posts, mostly giving people great ideas on how to be more efficient (and thus a bit more happy). I will not post too often, like once per 2 weeks. And I will start soon.

My first post will probably be about the most helpful online tools I use every day. I have just made my mind about this - a kind of behind the scenes information for your readers :) Joking. No one really cares at the moment. As they don't know me yet.
