If they're not going to spend a minute (a few seconds?) scrolling past five posts (or less on mobile devices), then I'm afraid there won't be many sites that will grab their interest. It doesn't make much sense to look at a few posts and say, "Yeah, this site isn't for me because the few top posts are subjects that don't interest me."

I wonder if the same people say that about Facebook and Twitter trends. "Oh, Kanye West and Angelina Jolie are the trending posts today? Yeah...I'm not going to use Facebook anymore." I don't think that's how it works. Most people on social media don't use it because they like what trends on their favorite sites every day. They use it for the social aspect of it.

It sounds like the people in question here just didn't want to join Steemit, regardless of what was trending.
