Sometimes I write articles to gather information rather than to promote my point of view, or educate about a certain genre or topic I think I am knowledgeable about. Today’s writing is indeed about that very thing.
My time on Steemit has been relatively short, but I feel I am a fast and adaptable learner and there’s always something I would like to know about, but don’t. So these guys I am talking about, well I would like to know just what drives them and maybe someone can educate me and the rest of us!

Namely @surpassinggoogle, @hr1 and @newhope. From left to right is the order of vastness of these whale characters.
All, at some point have up-voted my work for one reason or another. All appear to give to minnows and all appear to never comment on other’s work.
I will be the first to admit when one of these whales passes by me and drops me anything from $0.24 to $7 I am genuinely thrilled.
They give me that buzz feeling of appreciation, and these characters genuinely do seem to appreciate work, anything charitable or sometimes simply supporting minnows.
So what do I know about them? Very little actually.

@surpassinggoogle is Filipino and has an affiliation to the Filipino community. He typically gives out votes of 1% or 2%. I have a connection to this community as my wife is a Filipina. He is also a witness and the most visible of the three people and has my witness vote.
@hr1 votes at a constant rate of 0.02% and rarely creates content. @hr1 has up-voted my content more than any of the others.
@newhope is the most mysterious of all, is ranked at (25) and votes at variable rates.
All these accounts were created in 2016, when Steem was a bargain buy.
In the case of @surpassinggoogle I can see what is happening, but what of these other two mysterious characters? Neither have a profile picture or a background picture.
They are certainly doing good things for Steemit, but who are they? I would love to know and maybe I can get a response, here’s hoping!
If you found this article so invigorating that you are now a positively googly-eyed, drooling lunatic with dripping saliva or even if you liked it just a bit, then please upvote, comment, resteem, engage me or all of these things.
hr1 sometimes voted for #runforsteem but that was a longer while ago. I dont blame them for not voting my posts. I handle my profile like any other social media page. Very thankful for steemit but wished I had stayed active at the beginning 🤑
Wish I had found it earlier, Hope I'm not too late for the big jump that we are maybe going to see.
A lot of these major whales are simply early investors who made some excellent calls to put themselves in the position they're in now. If they're investing in other things too, they maybe don't have the time or desire to post, but it stands to reason that they would reward people who are positively contributing to this community. After all, their investments will continue to grow as STEEM grows. By doing their part to reward good posters, they're keeping the reward pool circulating to the right kind of people.
Im with you there, the newest account of the three is December 2016, very old for Steem times. Im not really sure how they go about picking and choosing worthy articiles or even comments to vote up though. That is a manual task and is time consuming.
2016 is definately early for steem. I discovered it in 2017 and I am glad I did!
I can tell around 2020 is when many will come in in a rush. We are still early.
I hope you are right. I for one have invested some into the platform and wish I had put more in when it was < $2.
This is by far the most interesting topic that I have come across today on steemit. As someone who has been on the receiving end of the generosity if some of the bigger players I can testify to the fact that not everybody out here has there eyes on money.
This post seemed especially relevant today when so much vitriol is being spewed over the bot debate and reward pool rape. These guys are the angel investors for red fishes on steemit. To know that they are are there does my heart a world of good.
I know nothing about whales so definitely interesting to me too I’m still new so I have not been on the receiving end of anything like that but maybe one day soon
Trust me, they are very much there but they can only do so much. Just be patient and you'll probably see one of these majestic fairy creatures for yourself :-)
Yep, I know it'll happen one day :)
You are whale to me
@surpassinggoogle not yet, but I feel good here and that I can make a difference in this space and bring something new to the table. So I am patient :)
I like the name slobberchops lol. Sounds freaky lol.
I'm just attention seeking hehe..
I got some rewards by HR1 too, still don't know why or who he or she is, but that he or she supports the little steemians is obvious and somethink I admire even not knowing who it is :)
@hr1 is great, I remember him upvoting my very first post and my introduction one too. He is the most prevelant of the three.
Strange not knowing his motivation :) but @hr1 is one compasionate person.. great to see !!
I was hoping one of them would visit this post and give us information but its not happened... as yet.
I've had a few votes from these and others who never post. I'm grateful, but there's no easy way to thank them. Are they making much from curation?
Yeah I guess they are making something from curation, some are also doing it as selfless service to the community.
Yes, they are making a decent chunk from curation, but they are giving so much back. There may be more of them, but if so Im not aware.
Interesting insight into the world of whales. It is indeed nice when one gets a large unexpected upvote. However i wish there was a better system of alerting whales that to promote real quality content.
Thanks for sharing this, @slobberchops.
I know I've received votes from @hr1 and @newhope before (not sure about @surpassinggoogle), and our group @thesteemengine benefits from their votes from time to time also. It's great that there are still some of the large accounts out there who enjoy rewarding good content. Glad they haven't switched over to selling their votes.
We may never know who they are or how they choose posts, but we can still be grateful for them! Thanks again for sharing!
There may be more of them, but these three characters are the only ones I have encountered so far. We may think its too late for us, but maybe one day we can aspire to do the same for some others.
O believe most of these mysterious whales may belong to certain group in steemit Inc. and they act like watch dogs to see and be sure that certain whales do not abuse the platform with their votes
Thats a possibility, maybe the latter two.
This is a nice thank you topic.
I will say I have received @surpassinggoogle and @hr1 upvote. I haven't received @newhope upvote. Surpassinggoogle, Terry Ajayi is one of the main reasons some users are still on steemit, From his free comments upvotes and upvoting user posts. @hr1 is also a good whale, he has been curating newbies post at 0.2 0.3.
I believe @newhope does the same. If all whales can be like this, the retention rate on steemit will be high and everyone will benefit. They really deserve some kudos.
I agree, they do deserve some kudos. I wish there were more like these people on Steemit.
@hr1 is giving me some upvotes, too. I am really thankful for his/her help. I'm pretty unsure if am right, but he is a member of the #dynamicsteemians, too.
If they do something good, whoever we should support it and we must continue to work. So steemit moves towards the better.
Thanks @slobberchops
There are a lot of whales that are this way. I have gotten big upvotes from quite a few people that have no content and only seem to upvote occasionally. I would imagine most of them were in since the early days of steemit..
Good thing they are here, they lift us all up and give us a boost. Hopefully more of us can become bigger and help the smaller ones along.
Ditto on the @hr1 thing. Depending on what I post about, I can pretty consistently get an upvote from them. It would be interesting to know how or why they do it. I'd like to be able to reciprocate in some way. Better yet, it would be cool to start a dialog with them. Find out what it is they like about what I am posting so I can build on that or highlight it more. @yoo1900 upvoted me once for a pretty substantial amount, but it seems to be a bot account or something. No real interaction at all besides blessing others with upvotes :)
plenty of these important whales are honestly early buyers who made a few exquisite calls to vicinity themselves inside the role they'll be in now. If they are making an investment in exceptional subjects too, they possibly do no longer have the time or desire to place up, but it stands to reason that they could praise folks that are undoubtedly contributing to this community. in the long run, their investments will continue to grow as STEEM grows. by way of doing their aspect to reward pinnacle posters, they'll be retaining the reward pool circulating to the right type of human beings.
Id definitely want to know who @hr1 is tho...ive recieved a ton of upvotes from him but he or she is quite a mystery
This post was take my attention to read. Same to you @slobberchops. I am very curious about their character and who are they. Anyway, Im glad that this major whales help me a lot and motivate me to post more on steemit specially @surpassinggoogle and @hr1. Hoping that you will post their characters so that i have knowledge who are they. Thank you!
kumusta slobberchops! :) very cool post on the whales. i often wonder about that.. yay!
im following u and upvoted now.
kumasta ka!, well I do know something about mr @surpassinggoogle now, the other two are still mystery men!
:P yeah, terry is so chill and nice. i've met him 3 times. i know of hr1, but not the third..
I'm still not involved enough in Steemit to delve into the world of minnows, whales and anything in between. Thought provoking though as I start to try and educate myself a little more.
You really should get into this more, I'm loving it more every day. If you work it, it gives back more.
I can relate with your post. I have been upvoted by @surpassinggoogle and @hr1 a few times myself and like you, I was thrilled.
I believe these guys are driven by the benevolence in their hearts; the need to help others is what drives them. I say a big thank you to them and every other person out there who continues to give to minnows with no hopes of getting back.
@hr1 is one of the mysterious account on steemit. I believe it was created specially to upvote minnow.
It always upvote just few minutes after you hit the submit button, this helps boost new posts.
I also want to know who or those behind the account.
You may be right, I have'nt seen @hr1 visit me on this post yet, but who knows.
As a newbie, I'm more than grateful for those whales, although I haven't received any upvotes of them (yet) I'm extremely grateful that anyone takes the time to upvote people like me, newbies getting to know (and to love) steemit and criptoworld, so, thanks guys @surpassinggoogle @hr1 @newhope. Thanks a lot
Looks like you have now :)
Yup! Again, thanks a lot!
Terry (surpassinggoogle) is a great community builder and very active. As for the other two... I have no idea whatsoever.
sir @surpassinggoogle is really great.
We all the steemians being helped from him. @hr1 also upvotes me. But @surpassinggoogle! just amazing. The steemit really easy to use and very interesting to blog. As a blogger everyone likes steemit so much.
@surpassinggoogle is always best :)
Iv had a few votes from @hr1 and always wondered who they are!
Seems like they just appreciate minnows with good content 🤗
I know @surpassinggoogle and in fact he is the most generous whale i have ever known. I have heard of @hr1 but have not gotten any upvote from him. I am hearing about @newhope for the first time.It is good to have some of these people around in the community. They are such an encouragement to us all.
I am definitely checking on the other two but I testify to the benevolence of @surpassinggoogle. My biggest upvotes and greatest encouragement on the platform had come from Terry.
My first time of hearing of @newhope and @hr1
But i can witness to the good works or benevolence of @surpassinggoogle.
@Surpassinggoogle is my favorite, hr1 follows but I've never heard of @newhope. Going to check this mystery guy out.
I don't know if we will ever really know! There are quite a few of them with different motivations and some simply use bots!
@hr1 dropped by a few times. It appears that it likes the steem or Steemit tag, always posting in the same format, around the same time and pictures and text combined.
@newhope didn't visited me yet. But it appears that this account like reputation. It should be at least above 55 or more luckily 60.
Don't know anything about @surpassinggoogle
It is good to see that they are trying to support the community!
Terry you love brother <3
hr1 might just be getting curation rewards?
Hi! I am a robot. I just upvoted you! I found similar content that readers might be interested in:
https://www.livejournal.com/manage/settings/?cat=display
That URL shows zero content and as I have just wrote this directly from my brain I feel this is unlikely!
WTH are you talking about @cheetah. It's a blank page.
Cheetah must have a bug i got the exact same comment today
that is with the aid of far the maximum thrilling subject matter that i've encounter these days on steemit. As a person who has been at the receiving quit of the generosity if a number of the larger gamers i'm able to testify to the reality that no longer every person out right here has there eyes on cash.
This publish appeared particularly applicable these days whilst a lot vitriol is being spewed over the bot debate and praise pool rape. those men are the angel buyers for red fishes on steemit. To understand that they may be are there does my coronary heart a international of accurate.
Your comments are a messed up version of the comments of @hashcash's above. Why not try and form your own opinion instead of copying others?
