Steemit Naming Contest: Rename this site!

in #steemit8 years ago

steemit.com?!

No, not really. This site is going to continue to be named steemit.com. But we do need a new name for the software that runs it.

No, not the blockchain app written in c++ (steemd), but the javascript application that is our web front-end code. Right now, we are using the term "steemit.com" to refer both to the website you're probably reading this on, as well as the big ball of JS code that is responsible for drawing it on your screen.

It lives here: https://github.com/steemit/steemit.com

It is our hope that we can remove all default references to "steemit.com" from this code (though we will continue to use it for this site, of course), and make it dead-simple for anyone to deploy on their own server and on their own domain name. To that end, we need a new name, to logically separate the "steemit.com javascript codebase" from "the steemit.com website" (which will retain its current name).

Naming Contest

Here's your chance to be part of our community's shared history, and to win ONE THOUSAND cool steem backed cents.

I'll judge the comments in about a week and pick the best one, just like last time. :)

Preferred: pronounceable words or names 20 characters or less

Averse: initialisms and abbreviations, multi-word names, et c.

It should be clear and unambiguous without spaces or capitals or punctuation, as it will end up at github.com/steemit/<your name here>.

Good luck, and thank you!

bigballofjscodethatisresponsiblefordrawingsteemonyourscreen :)

is that with the smile face or with out?

Spaces and special characters were not allowed, so it would have to be without :)

Acclaim -a synonym of esteem

First runner-up. I liked this one a lot. :)

Playing off the answer by @demotruk I will suggest

Locomotive

because this js is the thing that is "causing motion" as it moves us all to participate in the engine moving steem forward!

How funny, I seem to have onboarded the Steem train 7 months late, but when I saw this post I asked myself, why choose Condenser for the engine name? Did nobody suggest Locomotive? But someone did, so I guess there is good reasoning behind the decision here

mason

Because it is used to 'chisel' things permanently into the blockchain.

I like this one.

Latitude. " freedom of action or choice"

IMHO too reminiscent of Google Latitude, the product they turned the original Dodgeball into after buying it (before the acquired founders eventually quit and made Foursquare).

Vapor

Maybe we should call it vaporware? :D

Nice. I won't forget about you when I hit it big with my winnings. 🤑

vaporo vapos vaporarium

How about a French word... Laissez. As in Laissez-faire.

As a dull and gray developer geek I would call it a frontend :)

But when I try real hard to come up with a great name then I would call it ....

Triglav

pronounced tɾiːɡlau̯

meaning Three Heads (Tri Glav)

Three reasons:

  1. Triglav is a Slavic god of Prophecy and Sooth-Saying - prophecy and soothsaying go well with social media / community blockchain platform, I think :)

God Triglav also connects the past, present and future on one hand and underworld, earthly world and heaven on the other hand.

  2. Triglav is also the name of the highest mountain in Slovenia. Yes, it has three peaks :)

  3. Triglav was once a computer desktop model with three different CPUs and operating systems inside the same box. Amazing concept and well before its time.

Do you see any parallels? I do!

I'm guessing you've already thought of and decided against steemengine. But I'm saying it just in case.

It's a little bit cliché, isn't it? Our Hubot is already named watt. I imagine we can do better.

Honestly when I work with software libraries I like the name to be generically descriptive.

But here's some more references for inspiration for the history of steam power:

The first full-scale working railway steam locomotive, called the 'Puffing Devil,' was also built by Richard Trevithick in the United Kingdom and, on 21 February 1804, the world's first railway journey took place as Trevithick's unnamed steam locomotive hauled a train along the tramway from the Pen-y-darren ironworks, ...

No idea but something that is not confused with another word easily like steem, it is too much like steam. Text corrections have already annoyed me and I've only just arrived

droplets

There's your name.(with or without the 's')

Can I make more than one suggestion ?

steemitator

You can make as many as you like. :)

spark ;sparkle ; scintilla ; flicker ; echo;

spark is already the name of an apache software project:

https://spark.apache.org/

no problem ...we will think and search :)

Prometheus

starmit

Gaze into the Haze and you see Steem.

My pick is Haze.

it's also a verb, which is what the software is used for!

Hmmm, perhaps "hazing" is a bad connotation from a PR perspective.

github.com/steemit/today

github.com/steemit/now

github.com/steemit/impugn

Ok, sorry I forgot about that. I will change them.

steemster ?

Hmm...how about Steemable?

entropy .... it is really a profound term, but for marketing's sake it can be earn trophy too. lol.

community
For now here's just a place bunch of believers come and talk about Steem.
After the paradigm shift, the meaning of community will be changed and sound like where you visit all the time and write, rewarded.
