A recommendation for the Tags and Topics

in #steemit8 years ago

Introduction

These are the recommendations for the improvisation of the place, coming from the first hand experience of a new user that came to browse the site after hearing rumors of the existence a monetized Reddit. So in my quest of browsing this new place the first thing i came across was the About page, then the FAQ, and then the 'explore page' which at the moment is the general trending page for all tags/topics, however this lead me to one little issue, information.

Description of Tags and Topics

while browsing the site i really wanted to know what exactly i was getting into, but the pages dedicated to each tag or topic don't have an information box to let you know exactly what you will find there, instead you will have to read an arbitrary amount of posts until you get a general idea towards what exactly that tag/topic was referring to, and this may not even work half of the time, as of now since the variety of content on Steemit is not much, this is not that big of a problem but as the site grows it will become one.

Organisation

Similarly to the previous point, the system lacks order, or at least a way to have things fall within an unified topic, for example in the topic 'curation' you can find things from history documentation, movie reviews, comment compilation post, list of most valued or undervalued post, or even site improvement recommendations and updates; while on the topic 'modeling' you could find all kind of things from cosplay, to computer models of chemical bonds, or figurine modeling, in essence since the tags are the same topics and these are up to each user to choose it ends looking like a random hub, because it is not being curated nor does it has any posting guidelines, anything can end anywhere. This could be solved if we had moderators to help place post within their respective topics, which wouldn't be all that hard since the site already has forms to regulate content, for example NSFW content.

Topics following

As of now we are able to follow individual users, but due to the way in which the system is organised we can't follow any topics in order to keep track of a certain kind of preferred content, which is both an inconvenience and at the same time, since almost anything can end everywhere it is convenient to not even be able to follow a topic.

TL;DR

Browsing the place as of now is quite cumbersome, it feels random, and at times you are better off following particular users like Curie from project Curie, rather than browsing the site by yourself in order to get some sort of coherent content feed.
