I fear Steemit will collapse under its own weight. There is loads of great content out there that just gets ignored. However, whenever a whales post something the upvotes go through the stratosphere and I bet never get read by most upvoters. The steemit community are starting to realise the only way to make any headway is to ride on the coat tails of the whales ...... shame. My fear is and I can see it happening the only people posting content will be the whales and everybody else will pick up the scraps in curation awards.
Sad but true!

A simplified scenario: Suppose there are ten whales, each having 40 votes x 100$, for a total of 400 votes x 100$.
The question to ask is: Are there really 400 posts per day worth 100$ ?
From a curation standpoint, the problem is the lack of excellent content that really deserves high payouts. I am a very small curator that has only 2 cents of vote worth. Still, my sense is that most of the posts paid out don't deserve what they get. Of course the daily reward pool is constant, so someone will have to get the daily rewards - whether the content posted is good, bad, or "automated" - like statistics reports. So the rewards end up in moderately good to good posts and a few very good to excellent.
If there is great content, believe me, curators will WANT to upvote it first because that will make financial sense to them. The faster such content is spotted and upvoted, the better for the curator (whether he is a small curator or large curator).
I don't care for the money. I post content I would post anywhere else.
Whales do not care. They just want to cash out their investement and the only way is to spread the SD first. Don't bother analysing who gets what. After the whales cash out we will be left with the dick in our hands in respect to payouts. We still have 2 years time until the completely power down so enjoy the right and back-up what you write.
Valid point, I agree with you
Things are going to work out on this platform, facebook, reddit and others will become like myspace. If you can earn a couple of cents for posting something it's better than being paid zero. Steemit just needs mass adoption and it can do it!
I do not see this happening that only whales will post. That is also not in their interest. They need new steemit authors and they do support those newcomers given what alexgr said. I myself will continue posting independent if I get a whale vote or not because I would do this anyway outside steemit.
🌞 upvoting your lifetime dreams!@steempowerwhale 🐳
Yes I agree but there's evidence that anyone is reading your posts. There must be a system where by we can see our posts are being read and hopefully appreciated.
Is there any mechanism by which it could become less centralized over time? Also does this platform discourage submitting links?
That is the WRONG way to go about it, and it will ensure the failure of the platform.
I go through all the "new" posts everyday and upvote and comment on meaningful topics that help people individually or the world as a whole to improve and better our current condition. I also upvote material that can help steemit become better.
Why don't other people do this? They are focused on making money, so they upvote popular personalities and right the wagon... and they also don't want to put in the time and effort to do it.
The community, whales and everyone, is to blame for the community's success or failure.
