The fact that Steemit can arbitrarily decide to censor their feed of the Steem forum makes Steem much less valuable to me.
Steem's only claim to fame is that the blockchain it runs on cannot be censored. Without that, it's no different content-wise than any other web-based message board out there.
Are there any reader applications that directly parse the blockchain to provide the uncensorable forum that Steemit apparently cannot?

the site is not currently working though
That's interesting, but it still relies on the promise of the admins to not alter the feed. I would prefer some sort of application like a miner that allowed me to personally verify the blockchain and parse it into a self-hosted webpage.
Download source code and run it :)
Oh, it really does connect to the blockchain network? I had the impression that it was using someone else's servers via Tor. I'll give it a try. Thanks.
how is steemit censoring their feed?
The simple fact is that we wouldn't know if something has been censored unless there was a mechanism to show differences between the Steemit website and the Steem blockchain. The very idea that they can censor the site makes me want to find a way to view the direct feed without Steemit's involvment.
do you have any reason to think they are?
an analogy
You are a male, you are capable of rape, after all you do have the equipment.
is there any reason we should think you are a rapist?
That's a rather unintelligent analogy, but I'll humor you. If a woman didn't know or trust me, then it would be sensible to assume that I was a potential rapist and to maintain appropriate caution.
I do not know or necessarily trust the admins of this site. For all I know, even if they weren't actively removing content, they could be influencing visibility of posts to increase their own Steem profits.
Without an easy a means of independently accessing the forum directly from the blockchain, none of us would really know, would we?
if you feel that way..
I didn't know or trust you,
it's only sensible to assume that you are a potential bad guy
and for me to to maintain appropriate caution.
Don't let the door hit you on your way out.
I could totally help you with this, but I'm a "gullible idiot" so why would I :P
I appreciate you being honest about it, but I'm sure I can find better information from someone who isn't.
