Over the last weeks I've been seeing my number of followers inching up towards 4000 and today it passed that milestone.
It's cool to see such a big number, but I'm aware that only a fraction of those are actively viewing my posts. It may just be a few percent, but that's enough to give me lots of good comments.
From the stats I've seen only about 7% of Steemit accounts may be active. The recent fall in the Steem price will not have helped those numbers, but last night's rally may bring people back. This has again mostly come from Korea. Perhaps the update from the Steemit team helped to boost confidence.
We have a great platform here, but growth is not guaranteed. Users want to see more innovation and scalability. It's still hard to start a new account and being noticed takes a lot of work. I think it should be hard to succeed. You need to work to make money and we want it going to those who deserve it.
Talking of those who deserve it, I received some flags for daring to criticise a certain 'cryptocurrency technical analyst' yesterday. One of his stooges flagged my comments and those of people I was talking to. They have a nice little earner going on there and don't like it threatened.
Luckily my reputation is strong enough to survive that, but others have really been hammered. I've built my reputation by being active on Steemit and people seem to (mostly) appreciate what I do. You can see I have posted and commented a lot. I don't ask for votes or follows. I leave it to people to decide if I'm worthy. Okay, so I do ask for votes in the open mic contest, but they can be tiny ones and I don't expect to win anyway. I want to see the community supporting all the great musicians taking part.
So I think we are generally in a good place. Success is not to be taken for granted, but the potential is there. There are those who just want to take, but we also have lots of people who want to build something amazing.
I'll be discussing all this with some fine Steemians at @steemcampuk this weekend.

100% agree with you! if you read my last post you will notice that I am doing a renewal of the users I follow, I have selected a group because I want to be an active follower, of course those who do not interact with me on the platform after a while will be replaced by others! I guess that's the essence of a follower!

Steemit needs some upgrades and i like to think that the developers are taking their time to make it good...
In any case, i still see bright future for steem blockchain and all the apps you can run over them... There is the possibility of some fork coming to attempt improve the experience and bring more people on board...
Many people quit steemit because they dont see big reward instantly, and they see other people make big money, that is very hard for a newbie to dig or understand...
I'm quite shocked to hear only 7% of accounts are active i would have thought it would be much higher, my following has been increasing too though i have noticed that there are a lot of bots in there. Regarding this analyst i assume you are talking about Haejin i personally am really reluctant to confront him because he could easily obliterate me lol...
The stats say only around 60k active. Maybe others will come back. Haejin uses bullying tactics and that is partly what I object to
The change in Steem price doesn't seem to reflect on Steemit. Is there a reason for the delay to what we see?
I have a constant struggle to keep my voting power up, but only only a week ago it was higher in terms of fiat rewards and should be again due to the 50% rise but it seems not.... yet.
Giggles!! This reminds me of oil prices. When crude goes up, the reaction at the pump is immediate. When the price of crude goes down they claim to be paying the higher price of the crude still aboard some tanker en route from wherever. I think with Steems VP it works the same way in both directions, slow to drop and slow to rise. I think that VP should be tied more to SP and Rep than account value in $ from a social perspective, but I'm certain the investors disagree.
The price used on the site is a 7 day average, I think. We should see post value increase if it stays up, but it's academic until you want to take out out
2 things struck me soon after joining Steemit, one was the transitory nature of the blogs, which I suppose is designed to push people to blog regularly to benefit, and the second was the financial principles upon which it operated - which to this day, I still flop between, OK maybe that will work, to, I'm really not sure I understand how it could work. For me, I think if it were somehow possible for blogs, which many invest a lot of time and effort in producing - could retain 'some' value and henceforth validity after the seven days. As for the second, I'm not sure there's a solution, and only time will tell. I can read 3 or 4 blogs by people who seem to have an intimate 'in' on how Steemit is really functioning, but all drawing different conclusions. Its confusing to say the least.
The cash incentive does also lend a disingenuous taste to the dish - of your 7% who is really interested in anything more than jumping on a good payout :)
I feel your not that way inclined :) and like me, probably just here because you enjoy doing what you do, writing singing playing, sharing your thoughts whatever. The idea of developing this platform into a more mature environment, would be to integrate more with other platforms and other systems of finance, in a similar way that YouTube has with videos, whereby a click has value regardless how old the material is. Maybe that would be a death blow ... but I wonder how else the platform might become more content than cash oriented. Its really a question of how you make it matter to people, else as you intimate, its population may be just as transitory as its content O.o

The original payment system meant that posts could keep earning for a month, but that was reduced to a week for some reason. I wish they could earn indefinitely, but that may put too much processing load on the witnesses. It's not ideal, but better than nothing. This is why I put something in my footer about rewarding a recent post if the one you are reading is old.
I'm enjoying the community here and the money is a nice bonus. For now it's not changing my life, but who know where we will be in a year or two...
I suppose I was thinking more a tiered system, retaining both incentive with higher payouts on new blogs, and a value, albeit lower for interest in older blogs. Anyway, my experience of these things suggests that if the platform survives, it will find its own style and direction. We shall see :)
It's all a big experiment. We may see more changes in the next hardfork, whenever that is. The communities feature may help the smaller players. There's more the big guys could do to help nurture talent.
We on steemit need supporters, not followers. But congratulations. You have around twice than me with excellent reputation. Good to see Steem and Sbd is raising
Yeah absolutly true. Could be a support button where could people click when they follow a guy for example one month. So they would be not fake just for following back.

They are the ones who process the Steem blockchain. You can vote for them from the top-right menu. I think it's best to see what they have been up to. I try to support some of the lower ranked ones as they have less chance of rewards.

I seem to pickup new followers every day but most are not engaged and do not seem to be boosting how much my posts are read. I think communities will help us form tighter groups on Steem and therefore have better interaction. It was nice to see the hivemind progress update.
There are those who just follow and do little else. It may be one in 50 who really interacts. I hope communities help

Indeed followers are a great number but doesn't mean antything in terms of bonding and 'fiendship'. I recently celebrated my 400th follower ;) But I think only 1 % really read my posts (ok perhaps some more). I think it is more important to interact with the persons or subject you're really interested in, that way it is a longer run bonding.. (i.m.h.o.)...

In your tag you use the word tsudoscience, is this for a reason or a mistake on the word pseudoscience? Sorry, not to detract from the points about followers and steem and all that. Imo investors mean nothing until crypto can scale. Its not about fiat investors its about global access.
It's a personal tag I use. I previously used the Tsu site and it came from that. It looks like Steem scales better than some other coins. I want to see people using it

I've noticed that followers don't mean much here at this point in the game but it is interesting to see the numbers climb. I saw someone today who posted a "follower check" where he announced that he would vote up any commentor on that particular post. I don't remember who it was but I thought it was a rather clever test. I wonder about the future of the platform and whether it can thrive when so many new members get thoroughly discouraged. Only time will tell
I vote up most comments on my posts to encourage people to come back. It's a good way for minnows to build up their rep.
i didn't realize that it would help the reputation but I suppose you are correct. I do think it is a wise way for the "haves" to prime the system with encouragement because in the long run the more people with positive experiences on the platform the better it will serve to protect their investments. I think a lot of people here are very short sighted about how this needs to develop in order to be sustainable.
Votes from higher rep Steemians increase your rep and comments are a good way to get those. Note that certain people rarely vote for anyone else.

Steemit is place for hard work, and somehow not so many like ''hard''work..Also with that ''earn money on Steemit'' many get wrong impression coming from other networks. Looking for easy money and when they see there is work to be done..
Also, agree with that digit number thing..How many are truly active? Not so many by my opinion @steevc.
A few hundred may be active, with less looking at my posts. It's those who engage that I care about
I have seen my follower number rise also. I use GINAbot and I see someone followed me then a little bit later unfollowed me and it repeats over and over. I have got some followers that are upvoting and responding with comments but not but about 1% do. It is nice to see that big number just wish they would comment and upvote too.
I think the people you are talking about broke Steemit and that is why the prices of Steem and SBD have dropped so bad. LOL. I agree that Steemit can be and will be a great place if people get involved in it for the right reasons, but there are always the takers. Steem On!
This it's a shame and unfairly, when someone puts flag to you for criticism, after all you express opinion and have on this right. It's a good, that your reputation is big and it didn't hurt you. Sorry for those, who have little reputation, their success could end before it began. Actually, I think it's pretty difficult to succeed on the Steemit, the number of followers does not speak of success, often it is random people, who do not even read your posts. Here are a little muddled thoughts
I think followers doesn't mean almost nothing in Steemit platform. A lot of people comes to follow and asks to follow back and they don't care about the content you create. This is a problem, but I think we can see from the posts how mutch upvotes you earn. That means more than followers. A lot of people comes to the platform and think that they will earn a lot of money without any work so they just follow every one, write to follow back, didn't successed and quit the platform.
Those begging for followers and votes on my posts may get flagged. No serious user will follow them

By the way some of people, I seen are spaming some shitty coments and upvoting themself. They have pretty big accouts so they upvote themself and earn money. So like that they can just spam and upvote themself and earn a ton of money?

There are no laws about what people can do here apart from posting illegal content. If people flag you lose profits and your reputation goes down. They can't take away what you have already made. It's up to the community to deal with abuse. There are various groups who do this, e.g. @steemcleaners.

I've discovered your post today by chance and I have to admit I agree on all your points! The real number of followers is much lower than the displayed number, but anyway... I always appreciate reading good articles and this one is definitely one of them!

Number of followers don't matter on steemit as there are a lot of follow for follow schemes going on here which are worthless to be honest
There are accounts with many more followers than me, but you will see they get few responses. It's quality, not quantity that matters
People who support the content creator are those guys who push forward. The number doesn't mean nothing.
Focusing on creating content is what everyone should do anyway.
There is no reason to be concerned about the number of followers when we can not influence it directly. But of course big amount of followers looks good :)
