I'm more interested in communities than SMTs. We have lots of ad-hoc communities around tags and things, but a more formal structure with moderation would be really useful.

Good to know! In case you didn't know, development of Communities and SMTs are fully independent. SMTs are being developed by @vandeberg and @gerbino (it's a soft "g") and Communities is being developed by @roadscape and relies on Hivemind (it's non-consensus).
I think its too late now for comunities. STEEM had a real opportunity for mass onboarding when G+ went belly up. With comunities, it could have made G+ group admin import of sorts. A missed opportunity AFAICG.
There have been missed opportunities, but there is still nothing else quite like Steem with any real community. So I'd say there is still a chance.
