Short and sweet

in #steemit8 years ago (edited)

I see some people want to encourage short posts on Steemit, such as those you see on some other sites. Many people don't have the time to write long posts with lots of images and formatting, but they may find something interesting or funny that they want to share. I don't have any problem with that. It may encourage more people to post and potentially earn some Steem.

Perhaps Steemit needs a feature common to other social sites where they automatically include an image from the site you link to. We know that images are useful to get attention, but having to get the image link yourself is just extra work that many won't do. There needs to be an option to choose which image to use or to not have it at all.
GPlus

Are there any legal issues with pulling through an image in this way? FB, G+ etc all do it, so I guess it's allowed. I'm always careful about what images I use on my posts.

I do agree with the post that we need to make Steemit a top destination for cool content. Steemit is often compared to reddit (and even copied the type of name). If people will post there just for 'karma', then why wouldn't they post here for more tangible rewards?

I prefer to write longer posts, but there's only so many of those I can do each week. I will also see articles like this one that I want to share, but I'll always write some of my own thoughts.

BTW I passed 2000 posts and comments yesterday! Not sure when I passed 1000.

I would definitely consider your post short and sweet. The ones I vehemently dislike are when people ONLY post a picture or piece of art or meme - or whatever. I've said it before in comments and my own posts in various ways. I'm not a damn john. I don't like Wham, Bam, Thank you, ma'am's - leave your coin on the table type posts. They are hookers. Give me a reason to make a connection. That's my opinion and I'm sticking with it.
I do give leniency to newbies though. They may not know any better.

Awesome i like short and sweet , i post from work usually inbetween patrols and thats all i have time for, or else it takes me all night! Lol! Keep steeming on! 💙🖒👍💙

Short posts can be great but many are just sharing stories from other platforms and not really unique content. The great thing is that the way that we are rewarded for posting the readers will vote and determine if they want the encourage them.

It really is a democratic process that decides what is rewarded on Steemit. I think people are still figuring out what this site should be.

Yes, there are legal issues.
And no, Facebook etc. dont do it, their users do it. Its just too much trouble (and bad PR) to get the legal club on them in 99.99% of cases.

Of course as a platform you may be responsible but that depends on the country you are in.

If I paste a link into a FB post it fetches some details that include an image from the post and part of the text. That at least gives people an idea of what they will get if they click it.

Thats an exclusion to copyright.
Alas, the idiots here in Germany e.g. have passed a law (and try to do it on EU scale) where this is illegal.
Dont know what FB does here, I dont use it because I like my rights.

When you make a website you place some meta-information on the page that can be shared using the Open Graph protocol. I do not believe that there is anything wrong with including this on the site.

And it is Facebook that include this in their html. I am not sure about the legality, but the images has been put on the linked site for this exact purpose. I just did it myself on the comic web-site I created recently.

You can see it here. Look for the meta property- and the meta name-tag.

There is no qestion about that there is no problem with things that are allowed. But on 99% of websites, taking content is not allowed.

But just making the meta-tag shows that this is for linking use - I think it must be legal.

With OpenGraph tags you actually tell the site which wants to share your info: "Here is my data, please take it and share it."

Legal issues aside, of course :)
