Tips for new Steemians

in #steemit8 years ago (edited)

As part of my efforts to help new people here I offer a few tips from my experience:

  • Do an introduction post. Ideally this should include an image that gives some proof of your identity, e.g. has you holding a sign about your Steemit account. You can also link to your account from other social sites or blogs to show you control those
  • Read the FAQ and Welcome page for some more tips
  • Find some people to follow. Look around the various feeds and search for topics that interest you. This will ensure your feed has content that you will want to see
  • Comment on posts. Don't just write 'nice post' or similar. Ask a question or offer your opinion. Then others may check out your posts
  • Vote freely. Don't worry about using up your votes to start with. They don't have much real value until you build up some Steem Power, but it shows that you appreciate a post or a comment
  • Get involved in a challenge. There are various writing, photography and music challenges here. You may even win some Steem!
  • Use appropriate tags on your posts. Abusing tags may get you flagged
  • Ask if you are not sure. That can be in a post or in the Chat. There are lots of people willing to help. If you use Google for Steemit questions you are quite likely to find posts that help
  • Do not post content that is not yours without giving attribution. You can use images that allow re-use, but still show where they came from. If you plagiarise a web site or a post you are likely to be found out and you post may be flagged. There are bots that do this automatically
  • Do not post more than four times each day. The way things currently work doing this will result in your posts earning less. Go for quality, not quantity
  • Do not beg for follows and votes. You can earn them with good posts and comments

I think it's essential to make Steemit a fun experience for yourself. At least to start with you probably won't earn much, so enjoy the social experience.

If you have questions then please post in comments here and I will try to help.

Good clear advice :)

Great advise the quality will add value and in the end everyone will see the results of our adding value to the system.

Cheers. We need to keep new users on the right path and encourage them

That is true in my experience seems like slow steady work will be noticed over time. Recently I have notice I am getting at least 30 votes per post or more of it is a better post.

Typo:

Got for quality, not quantity

*Go

Cheers. I'll fix that

Thanks for the useful advices (I did write quite much here recently but still consider me as "new")!
What is still not clear for me is how to use images one found in the Internet. Is it "allowed" to include them in ones texts (or only to give the link to the page?) as long as one adds the original link or what exactly is to be done?

I have been using images from places like WIkimedia where the licence allows re-use, but I also link back to where they came from. I think that's okay. You can use the Tools > Usage Rights options in Google to find such images. I try to use my own images when possible, but it does help to have some image on a post to get people to notice it in the feeds.

I've not had anyone say I'm doing it wrong so far.

Thankyou Im brand new here these tips are good.

Happy to help. You've made a good start. Good luck

Thanks for sharing this! As a new steemian, I've been learning many of the things you've summed up and think they are very useful tips to all of us newbies!

I'm very much enjoying steem so far. Mostly because of the nice community. It's rare to find a community of mostly positive and nice people these days.

Happy to help. It looks like you have made a good start. I hope Steemit works out for you.

Nice post! ☆☆☆☆☆😎 ;-)

I'll take that as irony, given what I said about comments ;) Sorry, but I've seen some people who only ever write the same comment. One just used a smiley every time.

It was irony. I couldn't resist.

There are a lot of new users that will find your info helpful. Thank you for sharing this information. 😎

I hoped so :)
