Is The Price of Steem Being Held Down Because The Signup Process For Steemit Is Often Broken?

in #steemit7 years ago

I posted recently on how I was unable to help friends create new accounts on Steemit and found that I was not alone. I was told that at least one big Youtuber was attempting to get many 1000s of followers onto Steemit but failed due to the signup problems here. Is this affecting the price of steem and who might benefit?

Disclaimer: I am not accusing anyone of anything here and I don't even know whose responsibility it is to keep the signup process running correctly for Steemit.

If New Users Can't Sign Up, Then The Demand For Steem Is Kept Low

post on Steem Inflation, the amount of Steem tokens available per user will continue to decrease as new users join Steemit. Therefore, the rarity of the steem tokens will increase as new users join and so too will the value of the individual tokens increase in response. As you can see in @fyrstikken's

This creates an interesting dynamic in that those who want to invest in Steem now and buy as much as possible at a low price are benefited by the Steem userbase being held as low as possible for a while. If I were a whale with particular interest in Steem, I would be using my presence on the site to generate as much post payouts as possible and then also using my payouts to buy more steem.

My Inner 'Detective Columbo' Has Some Questions

Given the inherent benefit of a broken signup process to those with finances to buy up large amounts of steem - I am posing a question to you here... Do those with the 'method' of limiting the amount of new steem signups, also have the motivation to ensure that the signup process doesn't get fixed?

I appreciate that Steemit and Steem are complex systems that I don't fully understand - so am I totally missing something here that makes my entire logic pointless?

Wishing you well,
Ura Soul

yes, for new account registration, they track:

IP, email and phone number, and all must be unique (due to bots signing up for new accounts)

  • IP, use a VPN
  • email - create a new account if necessary, and change it later (not sure this feature exists yet, but you can forward email to main
  • phone - use a phone texting site (that hosts numbers and allows you to receive a text message on the web page), and when they text you for confirmation number, it will show up on a shared page, others will only see your confirmation number, nothing else about you..

It should be obvious when you fail to register because of one of the above issues, but it's not.. you just never get approved.

I know it's the highest priority to fix this problem, the new signup process is probably being tested now.. by a new means that will self pay for new accounts (honorary SP that pays back the delegated SP over time), instead of using delegated SP from one of the steemit accounts.

So yes, Steemit is hobbled by this until it can fix it, and they are more than well aware..

I see, ok - As a system engineer I find it bizarre that such a simple thing as inserting some notification text to explain the situation has not been done for such an important issue. It could be resolved easily in under 30 minutes and yet this has been a problem for at least months. When I see such situations, especially in a site like this where there is millions of dollar flowing through it - I get suspicious and if not suspicious then at least concerned by the apparent intentions of the site operators.

I also tried multiple times to sign up and waited a few weeks between each. While my husband had been approved immediately, we were unable to get my account approved no matter what we tried until finally he did the third-party route to get me an account. We had friends who signed up at the same time and had no trouble, then others who could not get signed up no matter what they did. It's a head-scratcher to be sure.

For new registrations, they tracK 3 things you need to make sure are unique and nobody else in your house has already used:

IP, email and phone number, and all must be unique!

To fix up each I suggest:

IP, use a VPN
email - create a new one, and change it later? (not sure this feature exists yet, but you can forward email to main
phone - use a phone texting site (that hosts numbers and allows you to receive a text message on the web page), and when they text you for confirmation number, it will show up on a shared page, others will only see your confirmation number, nothing else about you..
It should be obvious when you fail to register because of one of the above issues, but it's not.. you just never get approved.

Yes, we considered the identity issues and did make sure we completely separated mine - and in the meantime had friends who had multiple people in a household sign up without a hitch. What's ironic is that we do have two people interested in posting separate unique content but somehow couldn't get both onto the platform.

Yep, I'd say that is one of several things going on!

As you say:

Those with the 'method' of limiting the amount of new steem signups, also have the motivation to ensure that the signup process doesn't get fixed, and some whales are generating as much post payouts as possible and then also using those payouts to buy more steem.

you pesky and nosy alpaca you ! (-:

This is a crazy conspiracy theory! The Steem development community is literally fixing the signup problem right now. Hard Fork 20 will automate signups in a very sophisticated way, ensuring that people can't mass-signup in an attempt to drain Steems from the system.

Before the end of 2017, signups will be automated.

Whales have a lot more to gain at this point by seeing Steem go to the moon than by earning post rewards.. keep in mind, even a great post reward is miniscule compared to a whale's investment. True whales have hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of steem, and stand to earn millions if Steem reaches, for example, $10 in the next few years.

i'll look forward to hard fork 20 upgrades, ty

That sounds good - is there something in the plan to stop all the self upvoting from multiple accounts and whale circle jerking that is draining the pool too?

Since there has been zero feedback about this issue from anywhere at all, we have little left to go on but to speculate as to why that might be.

Yes! I have had three people get excited and try to sign up, either to never receive a confirmation email, or have some other difficulty which should have been minor, but ended up throwing a wrench in the whole process. None of these three people are on Steemit now, and I feel a bit silly for preaching the gospel and saying "Sign up! It's great! I would be constantly promoting this platform if the signup process wasn't so fraught with confusion and wasn't so buggy!

Thanks for letting us know - it appears that just in this thread there are more users who were unable to join than have even taken part in this thread!

I was able to get 3 friends to sign up each one of them posted an article and only got one up vote mine, so the three of them quit. I don't think it's the signing up that's the problem, the problem is all these guilds and voting bots that make it easier for people to just delegate their SP and get curator rewards easily, the problem obviously being that these guild s and bots always vote for the same people. Instead of worrying about people not being able to sign up, we should be worrying about keeping the people who are already here, here. How do you do that? Up vote their posts, that's all there is to it, as long as people are making some money they will stay and produce material otherwise they just leave.

There are numerous issues to be dealt with, for sure - however, i assure you there are serious bugs with the signup process in some cases - I was unable to sign up 2 different people, no matter what I did. In the end I was forced to pay for the accounts to be created by a 3rd party service. Numerous people commented under my previous post on the topic that they have experienced the same thing.

Well the three I told you had no problems, it wasn't instant obviously but if I'm not wrong all of them got their sign up email less than 2 days after signing up.

Ok, understood - I don't really know what's going on, but maybe there's just a few serious bugs that only occur in some circumstances.

As for the price being held down, you know what really has me wondering (I don't say you are not right, I am just giving an idea I have) every time Bitcoin takes a hit Steem and most other alt coins behave more or less in the same way. Now I can understand the others, but Steem, you have a huge amount of Steem powered up you would take 13 weeks to power down all of it and yet it's synchronization with BTC price changes is almost instantaneous, how can this be?

The price of Steem is not really dependent on Steem Power since steem can be held in wallets and in exchanges in it's a liquid form. I don't recall seeing any data on how much steem is held as steem power and how much is not - but that info would help clarify things.

Well I see a lot of Steem Power just with these 25 guys.

Hmm... I have had a couple friends say they signed up but then I never see their accounts activate. I assumed they just did not follow through, now you have me wondering if they never got their authorization. I did not realize there was a problem, thanks for letting me know.

You are welcome, it would be interesting to find out what your friends say on it.

I just got my brother in-law signed up - had to remind him to check his spam folders - he finally found the activation email 😋

However, I also had 3 friends that seemed really interested and signed up right in front of me. None of those three, which would've been batched in the same date/time, ever received activation emails. I reminded them to check filters and folders, but they claim to have never gotten anything. Not sure they are as excited as they once were, but they're still trying. I still cannot confirm its not their error, rather than Steemit, @fishyculture.

i believe they track IPs. my brother tried signing up at my house and they never sent him a confirmation e-mail. he gave up and thinks its a scam pretty messed up.

I think there is an aspect related to IP tracking, yes - although there appears to be several other issues involved too.. thanks for your comment.

I think this is a major problem the devs need to fix for steemit to ever be taken seriously.

yes, they tracK

  • IP, email and phone number, and all must be unique
  • IP, use a VPN
  • email - create a new one, and change it later? (not sure this feature exists yet, but you can forward email to main

Yes totally. The signup process really needs to be made slicker and simpler if we want steemit to move on to Centre Court.

If you hold a party, but make it really too difficult to get through the front gates many guests may just go home again.

I've been trying to get my cousin on for some time now. He always has issues.

Thanks for letting us know. :)

My son tried to make an account with his own number. He got the first email saying he would get notified when approved. Its been months and it never happened.

it failed for one of the 3 reasons:

  • IP address is duplicate of existing user,
-phone or email is same as existing user.

Sure email and phone is different. Ip is probably the same coz he lives in my house lol. Kind of sucks coz you don't run into that on Facebook or Twitter or YouTube.

thanks for letting us know.

interesting topic.... sounds like something for a diagnostic analysis, maybe by @paulag or someone of that ilk. retention on steemit is an ongoing issue, as well as assessing what are the strengths and "calling card" of steemit, meaning the key attraction. the fact that the steemit community is non-mainstream is both a plus and a minus, depending on viewpoint, imho

ditto, i had trouble signing up too. Don't know how I did it, one day after I long gave up, on a lark I tried signing in, and I could.
Never got any kind of notification.
Confusing process.

I was wondering why Steem keeps dropping or staying so low.

I signed up and had my account aproved in about 24 hours, some people i know got their account approved in under 1 hour.

OK thanks. When I created my initial account it was quite fast - but every attempt since then has simply failed.. It is not that the process was slow, it simply failed completely.

I wonder who the real owners of steemit are

I do know a few people who waited almost 2 weeks to get approved. Another family has been waiting almost as long. Both were using the same internet service as they live in the same household, same isp..

Anyone know if that slows things down?

You are totally right. I'm glad you're very well informed, that's why you make a lot of money
