Steemit Will Never Be As Large As Facebook, But That Is A Good Thing

in #steemit7 years ago

I see comments and posts saying that Steemit will grow to be like Facebook, but that will never happen. Sorry! Steemit will grow and should do very well, but it will never be bigger than Facebook but that is a good thing. Don't be shocked.

One of the things that keeps people on Steemit is the reward system. It is nice to make some extra money while putting your thoughts out to the world. For many people it is a way to earn an income or a nice added revenue source.  Success on Steemit takes hard work and effort and that is why it won't ever be like Facebook.

Facebook has over a billion active users a day and at least 80% use Facebook to kill time. (Not sure of the number, but a logical guess.)

It is a way to comment about stupid stuff, share information and most people do it during down times when they are wasting time or distracting them from doing something more important.

Think of how many hours you have gone on Facebook while you were at work? We all know that one person who is on it constantly while working. It distracts them. There is no real value in being distracted by Facebook. People like the social media giant because they can keep in touch with friends and family and it gives them something to do when they are board. Trolling, commenting and posting about nonsense and seeing no return.

The thing that makes Steemit different is there is a return. The thing that really sets Steemit apart from Facebook is the quality of content. You can't just share articles that other people have written and add one comment and see success here. People can't troll here and see success.

I see it like this...

Facebook is a great way to waste time. Steemit is a great way to make time.

If time is money, then posting on Steemit long enough and good enough will get you time. You'll be able to make the extra money to take a vacation and spend time with your family like I am doing... See how I'm paying for Disney with Steemit.

I generally wasted about 2 hours a day on Facebook. I have dedicated that time to Steemit and I am already seeing significant results. If I posted all the same content on Facebook I might have more views, and I might have a few great comments, but no real value. Tons of people post on Facebook all the time and most of the content they post wouldn't get a single upvote on Steemit.

The masses are not built for Steemit. The masses are not smart enough to contribute to Steemit. It might be brutal, but it is the truth. Most people just don't have much to say. Facebook is a great place for people that don't have much to say. They can stay there.

Steemit is for people that are ambitious, smart and like learning. Those three characteristics are the things that bind us all. We all have that in common.

We don't want the masses here, but that won't stop us from growing. Not at all. There are millions of people like us out there and they will find out about Steemit and when they do, they'll love it. There are not a billion of those people though and that is alright. That is what makes Steemit such a great place. We are special.

This is a great place filled with awesome people. I'm so glad you spent some of your time with me.

I totally agree with you, but I was not bringing it to the point like you did with this blog. The mass will not join here, because it is real work here to produce content, stay in contact, read and decide. They are simply too lazy or not smart enough.
But steemit has a lot of potential, with all these clever guys here. Just think about all the quality content and google / SEO. The future is bright for steemit. And even better with only 2 Million bright heads, than with 1 billard lemmings. :P

I couldn't agree more. I think long-run, the value of Steemit will skyrocket as we start occupying the top spots. It is also something to consider when doing a content strategy.
I really appreciate you taking the time to read and reply. It means a lot. I can't wait until we 2 million active smart users. hahahaha! All of us here already will be the smartest of the lot though!

Very deep, interesting and true. Even I am telling my friends these days that Facebook and twitter will shut down after 2 or 3 years due to Steemit but I guess from now, I should shut my mouth.

lmao, Yeah, Facebook isn't going anywhere. Too embedded in advertising and too many people use it. Twitter has a shorter life span I think, but still think it has longer than 3 years. Hell myspace is still open. It will grow, and be huge, but I don't think it will hit super mainstream like Facebook ever.

It is a way to comment about stupid stuff, share information and most people do it during down times when they are wasting time or distracting them from doing something more important.

This is important. You do not want to be one of these people. Distractions like Facebook will impede your progress towards your goals.

Great post. Still followed :)

I agree 100%. I wasn't even realizing I was wasting so much time until I found steemit. Then I saw what that time was really worth. Thanks for following, I'm following you too.

This is fantastic. Bookmarking to come to later! Thanks Keys

You got it!

upvoted, thanks for what you are doing ☺

Tahnk you very much. Thank you for taking the time to read. I'm following you!

thank you

Yes! I totally agree with you. Facebook is never going anywhere. People can share silly memes and get reactions on Facebook. I don't imagine you would be incredibly successful to do that here unless you have worked hard and built a strong following. Then maybe. I'm very new here so I'm just assuming this. Blogs with useful content is what Steemit seems to be about. Facebook, you can post nonsense and get some reactions that you probably wouldn't get here.

You are right. I do share some goofy GIFs blogs sometime, but they are well thought out and make a point. At least I think so, lol. you are right. The best content will surface, and it is challenging. Sure there is some BS content that goes around, but that is rare and not the norm.
Thank you for the ongoing support by reading and replying. I appreciate it.

My pleasure! I really am liking it here.

There is no real value in being distracted by Facebook.

That statement above said it all, also your gifs were hilarious! Maybe the community will grow to the amount of users facebook has. Then the question will be is growth always filled with quality people like we seek to find on here? Will steemit become another mindless social media platform, I hope not.

I don't think it will because the challenge of finding success on here will keep all the lazy, dumb people from being active. lol Thanks for your ongoing support.

Couldn't agree more. FB is just another way to waste time and dumb down the masses. I rarely posted original content on FB, but on Steemit I find myself researching new things and posting about my findings. I feel that it is helping me and others at the same time. Great post!

Thank you for reading. I agree about the original content. I did some on there, but the responses were stupid and people don't take things seriously. I'm so glad I found Steemit. Thank you for taking the time to read and respond. It means a lot.

Completely agree with this! Steemit.com is full of genuine content and no Bs click bait!

I agree. lol.
Thank you so much for reading and responding. I really appreciate it.

No problem keep up the good content! Followed.

@walkingkeys, I really enjoyed this line: Facebook is a great way to waste time. Steemit is a great way to make time.

But a lot of the new users don't realize how much time investment is required to earn time that will be paid in the future.

I think Steemit will see waves of growth and decline as new users come in very excited to earn money and leave after they understand the commitment it takes.

I agree 100% I actually wrote a blog about it yesterday. I think it will succeed because it is hard and it filters out the lazy and the people here for a quick buck. It's awesome. It is hard to grow a following and deliver good content each day, but it is possible. Thank you for reading and I appreciate your reply. You got a new follower.

I think quality of growth is much more important than quantity. We've got a good group of people here now, and more like minded people will make this platform an incredible place to be :)

Great stuff!

Damn right! I treat the growth of my followers the same way. I don't do the whole, follow me back thing. This is a great place to be and you are one of the great people. Thank you for reading my work and replying.

True, Facebook makes the average person feel Important without putting much thought into their post, The more content put the less likely to be read. Steemit seems to be the exact opposite, the less content the more over looked. Steemit envoles more thought and attention to content, a big difference.
Blessings to you!!!

You are so right. I think you should write a blog about what you just wrote here. It sounds like you have a good grasp of the social world online. I would be interested to hear more. I think you are right on! Thank you so much for stopping by and reading and replying. The ongoing support means a lot.

My Pleasure!!
Appreciate your comments.
Definately enjoy your Post
Blessings!!

I was never able to really get into Facebook but I love steemit. I still have a Facebook account but can't bring myself to spending lots of time on it. I've just never had the urge I guess and never really saw the benefit to me.

Steemit, I understood the benefit right away and see it as a fantastic opportunity. I keep thinking that everyone else will once they find out about it too, but maybe you're right. Maybe steemit really is only for a certain type of person. I guess time will tell but either way, I believe steemit will be very successful (already is successful but will be more so) long-term.

Time will tell, but they both have a place and serve a purpose. I think Steemit will grow and have a huge community of thinkers and learners, and the BS can stay on Facebook. I use Facebook for work a lot, so I'm on there a lot, but I don't mess around commenting anymore. I just do that here. Thank you for taking the time to reply.

The more time and money Ive invested into steemit the less Ive started to get rewarded which can make it all seem like a waste of time and money as well.. And like youtube only some people will actually make money.. and its not user friendly so you wont see many old people using it

That is interesting. I have not invested into steemit with anything but time. If the price of Steem goes to $4 then that will be a huge game changer for you though. YouTube and Steemit have a lot of similarities. Definitely worth a blog by itself.

FB has another problem: If you post something that looks even slightly like an advertisement, it will be restricted from going into your friends' feed. Only a few people will see it. To get it seen by more people, you have to pay for the privilege. That's OK if you only do it once in a while, but if you're more ambitious about promoting, that $$ can add up real quick. If you do this for years without seeing much of a return, you begin to wonder why you bothered. Better to focus your attention on writing blogs that will actually PAY you!

It is the best advertising platform out there, so it does have that going for it. lol I agree though, if you want control over what you are posting, Steemit is the way to go!!! Also, welcome to Steemit. You picked up a new follower. Thanks for reading. You are spot on about FB controlling posts.

Upvoted, but only partially agree.

I agreed Steemit will never get to the size of FB, and it is due to the time needed to generate content and the time required to think about the content you read on Steemit.

But you may have missed the point that just because someone isn't good at creating content, doesn't mean they don't want to read interesting content.

The real long-term growth in steemit will require a ratio of readers to content creators of somewhere in the range 10 to 1. As a guess.

Many people imagine themselves as content creators. You, me, others.

Whereas a large portion will never really attract an audience.

lol, I don't know how to take that.

You lol.... Mission accomplished

Well written . But the most important thing to consider is that people don't know about steemit . They must do a research themselves which are a "hard" thing to do for most because simple : people are lazy .
They are used to facebook useless posts and they are happy with it. Too difficult to leave it since it is growing so fast and they have their friends, family etc inside there.

Then maybe we shouldnt use facebook as comparision?

I agree, but it is a natural comparison. Facebook is the biggest... by far. But we are different for sure. Steemit has honor. lol Thanks for replying. You picked up a new follower.

Totally agree! People work with rewards systems and even more so of it's with money. Also the smaller it stays the more accesible our posts can be :)

steemit is so great and i am glad that you are getting advantage of it entertaining your self in disney @walkingkeys , there is also an app called TALK LIFE where u can express yourself freely without judjment or disturbance , money? no instead you are viewing ads against your will so it sucks , i quit it , and switched here , even here i can express through posts and every body is supportive and kind ;) :)))))))

I agree the kindness is a great part. I haven't paid for my trip yet. I have seven months and about 700 blogs, but I'll get there. lol Thanks for the reply. you got a new follower.

the content here is defenitely better.
and for some of this content i think there should be a library not defined by the newest entry or the most trending. becouse some of the content here is so good and true every time you read it. people really invest themselves here.

Facebook will never be as big as MySpace. Not going to happen. MySpace just has too much of the market share and people are stuck.

People who said that were wrong. 100%. Lol, I said in 2005 Facebook was going to take over everything and I was pretty much right. Facebook is an ad platform that in invaluable and the masses care too much about stupid stuff to focus on the more sophisticated crowd of Steemit. I stand firm believing Steemit won't be as large as Facebook, but I still think that is good thing.

Naw, I totally agree. This is far more niche. That said, it's all driven by who shows up. If it's taken over by normies, more normies will come flooding in.

YouTube's a good example though. Though everyone watches, there's limited creators, and this platform is really for the creators it feels.

I agree we are what we make it. I feel a lot of the normies won't be active because of how hard it is to gain traction to make money. If they come here to make money, most will leave shortly after first payouts. The ones that like good content will find a great home. It depends what they are looking for I guess. We'll see. We have a long way to go. Thanks for the discussion. You got a new follower.
