There are only three things that make you stand out on first glance on steemit (at least for now) your name, your rep and your profile picture. And since their are multiple people with the same rep number, when you comment people will know it is you by your name and photo. The first thing that people usually see is the photo. It stands out more than your @name at it is were the eye usually goes first. So if you want to build recognition of your account make sure you have a profile photo that is unique and stands out.
There are a few options. You can open paint and make your own. It will look silly but it can bring a fun element to it. You can go to pexels or pixabay and edit one of their photos to use. Or you can take your own. I'm sure around 95% of people on here have a phone with a camera on it. There is also the selfie option. This will make you look the most authentic but make sure you take a photo that stands out in the small circle space. If you just look like a generic person (without detail) and not you, then you can blend in with every other person that is posting photo of themselves.
I suggest using colour to really stand out. It will make your pic pop in the small space that you have. But put up something :)
If you need to know how, go to setting and paste the link under profile URL. You might need to do it a few times to center it properly.
Haha, that is an interesting article! I agree with you. In contrast to other platforms, people here tend to stick to their picture much more consistently. Probably because we feel and recognize that within this ocean of articles and comments the picture is the primary identification icon. Surely, the name is important too, but when we suddenly change the picture it might be that others initially don't recognize us because our mind somewhat is on autopilot not even looking at the name any longer but only the picture.
At least this is my feeling ;)
You are right about the username too. But ya when you are going through so many posts the circle pic helps.
@banjo @cleverbot
You give advice about profile photo. A face, but you have some logo ... where's the catch? did you even read what you posted?

Spread this to help new people !
that's really good tip... profile pic. is more noticeable than username.
It is so funny, I designed a logo for you and haven't yet created one for me and neither have I uploaded my photo. Thanks for reminding :)
Or you can use a name or if you are rich enough to make a logo use it ,it will add more to your account ;)
How about your own profile pic or is that too outdated now
Thanks for the tip!
Great advice. I'm sure that it will help many new users of STEEM. Good luck to you and Love.
Greetings to you @whatageek. I liked this post of yours, but I think there's a discrepancy to what you preached here though. I just feel that if you want to lead an example, then just be one. I don't know you might have a photo profile elsewhere, but many didn't see it here. I know you're a geek. Thanks for reading. PEACE.
Hi There, I'm fairly new to Steemit and I'm wondering if you have any other tips on how to be more successful with the site? I noticed a larger uptake with my first couple of posts, however have experienced a huge downfall. Any advice would be useful if you have it!
Thanks for your help @whatageek
