You are right it is a blogging platform and the point is well taken as I too have made the comparison to Facebook. I have seen several Youtube users using this platform as well which i think is interesting. I think we find it hard to be found at times on Steemit but I am sure that YouTube is far harder to be noticed.
One of the things I like about Steemit compared to other platforms is the expectation for quality of curation as well as posts. Writing abusive comments to the authors on others sites seems to be the norm. Here you better have a well founded reason for being overly critical.
Finally in comparison to Facebook the focused content on my feed is much more rewarding to spend time on than looking at pictures of people's cats in costumes on Facebook.
So you are right its not Facebook but it deserves more of our time than Facebook and it has the opportunity to one day reward us for sharing knowledge directly.
