My Dlive testing - success!

in #steemit7 years ago

Hello Steemians!

Yesterday I've decided to setup Dlive so that I could stream. I'm thinking about drawing, playing some music and sharing my thoughts and ideas while drawing.

The unknown

After fiddling with it for hours and hours with no end in sight I wasn't able to get it to work. I did not realize that I missed that single and most important step which made me frustrated and I just had to quit in shame and call it a night.

I followed the guide from: @dlive at this link but unfortunately my logic at the time was keeping me from success. Not to mention that I've tried twitch, youtube and even mixer and all those streams worked normally. It only added to my frustration.

Today I decided to make a post about my Dlive failures and ask for help but while I was typing that, I typed and asked myself this one question:
#1 Do I post about my stream and then run OBS or #2 do I try and run OBS and then post about my stream?

As I've tried option #2 yesterday and having no clue why I did only that, I decided to try and pick the #1 option instead and to my surprise not even 5 minutes had passed and it worked! :)

That single and most important step

when in doubt - question everything!
That most important thing to remember if you want to stream is this:
Note: only after you've posted about your stream you may actually start streaming.

So this is your guide for next time:

  1. on your Dlive page fill out all the information needed (also add SERVER URL, STREAM NAME/KEY USERNAME and PASSWORD to your OBS) as is in the announcement post from @dlive, then click NEXT
  2. add or edit the post and (here it is - the one step I was missing!!!) POST it.
  3. now you will see your thumbnail image and START / END options, press START and only then you can activate OBS. It may take a minute or two as the connection needs to be established, but it works.

And there you go. You're streaming. :)

That little step kept me from success yesterday and I felt like a fool. Oh well...

My settings - but I bet you got these covered

Anyways, these are my settings for streaming (minus the key and password):
/go-live/info page

my OBS settings

As you can see, I have enabled "use authentication" option and filled the missing information with the info provided at dlive / go-live / info page.

I have also reduced the bit rate down to 1000 as I think that for my stream it's enough. I might push it back up to 1500 or 2000 later.

My lovely OBS error from yesterday

The thing that got me so frustrated.

I hope that I've helped someone with this post. I would be so happy if I was able to find that info yesterday but I wasn't able to. That made me create this post with hopes that someone is looking for answers and this will be it.

If you have any questions about how to stream on dlive let me know. I would be happy to help.

TLDR;
Only after you've posted about your stream you may actually start streaming.

Have fun and keep steemin!

Glad you finally managed to get it working dude! Would love to watch your stream if I manage to catch it :)

Thanks, I'll start streaming by the end of the week. I hope.
I think I have everything setup. We'll see.

@zneeke I'm very interested in this, so do people have to have a dlive account in order to vote your stream? Do they vote on dlive, or just on the post that gets created on Steemit?

Hey @ma1neevent it's pretty simple.
For voting you need to have steem account - that is the only prerequisite.
If you're on steem you can login to dlive with your credentials. It's exactly the same as with Dtube, Dsound and Dmania. I personally use active key because posting key won't work for Dlive (not sure if it's the same for other three).

People watching your stream can vote on dlive or they can vote for that post using steemit.com or busy.org. It's up to them. If you're following someone and have automatic vote set, for lets say 30 min, it will automatically vote after that time.

You can chat as well when streaming - but it's a bit buggy and there is few second lag for now. All the chat is turned into comments for that post (if you change the comment - the line in chat will change as well). I've found out that one because I made a typo and I tried to correct it.

That is all I know so far. More testing is needed by my side.
I hope it helps.

Great post. But I might be missing something. Am I supposed to make a post on steemit? If so do I tag it? Or title it with @dlive? Not sure how to link the two.

Hey, sorry for not answering sooner, I was sleeping.

No need to do the separate steemit post. It's all done from dlive site.
On the top - right side you have "go live" button
After that, add the thumbnail, tags, language and fill in the other info
Click next
Then you can edit the post that will be automatically (automagically) posted and you'll see new screen where you can start your stream

I hope this helps.
