The Trials and Tribulations in the Garden

Mother Nature has a way of showing us who is the boss when it comes to gardening.
Spring comes and we get all excited and plant out our seedlings for summer - our imagination runs away with us as we picture in our mind everything growing beautifully and the wonderful vegetables that we shall be able to harvest.

In some countries, things go smoothly, but here in the Cape we forget about the wind and just how hard it can blow - breaking and scorching plants as well as drying out the soil.
One would think that by now, I would remember this, - but no, every year I get caught!!

Last week we had incredibly hot weather, but as most of my veggies are grown in containers, I was able to see that they all had sufficient water to handle the heat - but then, after the heat came gale force winds and I had to go away for the day and when I came back I was so saddened to see the damage on my plants.

My borage plant was completely finished and I had to cut it right back - I know it will send out more growth in time, but it was looking so pretty before the wind.

But, my heirloom tomato seedling that I have been so excited about were also hit.
The picture below was taken when all was well.

And then, the wind came and they now look like this.

As you can see, the tops have been badly scorched and damaged so now I must hope they will still recover and that we have no more gale force winds.

The same thing has happened to my heirloom beans which were just starting to climb on to the trellis that I put up and so I must wait and see what happens.
Things don't always go the way we would like them to as Mother Nature does what Mother Nature does and we are then taught to be patient, let go and hope for the best.

Sort:

Mother Nature sure can be cruel. Sorry about your tomato seedlings

More strong winds predicted later today!!

the garden is very positive!

Aww your poor plants! I hope they will recover from taking a beating. You must get some serious winds! Maybe take the tomatoes indoors for a bit until the wind has done its thing?

Yes I was thinking of doing that!
