Looking after my own pets - Cats - Information for kids

A lot of people say they are not a 'cat person' but once a cat creeps into your heart there is nothing better to have as a pet.

Just like all other pets you keep you need to be responsible for you cat.

A cat is less work than a dog, but also needs attention - cats will make sure you give them attention when they want it.  They have quite a will of their own.... and in return you will have the luxury of cuddling a 'fluff ball' and getting some purrs in return.

Cats are family of the lion, leopard and jaguar and tiger, and they are just as majestic.  They are also very playful when they are kittens and you can have hours of fun entertaining them and you will also be entertained by them.

If you get a cat as a pet you must make sure that you feed them every day and give them fresh water.  Cats have a very keen sense of smell and will not eat food or drink water that is a few days old.  You can feed your cat tinned food and pellets but make sure if you do not use the whole tin at once, you put the left over food in a plastic container.  Do not leave the food in the can in the fridge - this can poison the food or the cat will not eat it because of the taste.

You can feed your cat in the mornings and evenings, or you can leave pellets in his bowl that he can eat whenever he is hungry.

There are a few food that you must never feed your cat because it can be bad for their health.  Have a look at the video and make sure you remember which food is not good for your cat.

You may see that sometimes your cat will eat grass.  Your cat did not turn into a vegetarian, it maybe has a stomach ache or it is to help to digest the food that it ate.  This is necessary for a cat to do sometimes.

If you look at your cats eyes, you will see it looks differently during the day that at night time.  During the day there is only a thin black line, but at night the black part is big and round.

The reason for this is that more light gets into the eyes at night, since cats are 'nocturnal' animals.  That means they are more active during the night. This is the time when they play and hunt.  They will sleep a lot during the day.

If kittens are small they can be very playful during the night and will maybe disturb your sleep.  Do not play with them on your bed, that they can get use to the idea that play will take place on the ground and when they get onto the bed, they will know that it is a space to sleep.

If your cat goes outside you will see that they scratch the trees and rubs itself against the tree and plants.   A cat's scent is very strong and this is the way in which they mark their territory to tell other cats to stay away.

If your cat is still small or you do not want him to go outside, you will have to have a litter box for your cat.  It is also very important that you clean the litter box frequently - you would not like to visit a dirty bathroom...

Make sure you wash your hands thoroughly after you are done cleaning the litter box.  You also need to buy new cat litter every now and then, otherwise it can become quite smelly.

If your cat is older and you let him go outside, he will find a place in the garden to make a little hole and use in the place of the litter box.  They will cover it up after they are done.  Cats have good 'toilet manners.'

Cats usually 'potty train' very easily.  If you just show them where the litter box is, they will find it again.  If the kitten is still very small, you can maybe scratch around in the sand that she can understand what to do with it.  Put the cat inside of the box but do not force him to stay there.  Also make sure you put it in a spot where it is quiet and he will not feel threatened.  Before you know it, your cat will use it's litter box.

Cats can walk very softly in order for them to be excellent hunters and be save from other animals hearing them.  You will also see that a cat can pull in his nails or let it come out depending on what they want to do.  Sometimes when you play with your cat, be prepared to get scratched.  If you cannot handle this, you must not have a cat.

NEVER EVER DE-CLAW YOUR CAT.  IT IS VERY SORE AND IT IS ABUSE.  Cats are made to have nails that comes out sometimes.

It can happen that cats like to scratch you furniture, but you can train them not to do it and you can get them a scratching post and enough toys that they do not bother scratching your furniture.

Cats are clean animals and they groom themselves, but you can still brush them to get rid of the extra hair that he is loosing.  Some people like bathing their cats, it is not necessary, but if you decide to do that, you must make your cat used to water since they are kittens, because naturally cats do not like water and they will scratch you.

Cats do not always like change and you need to be patient with them if you introduce something new to them or move to a new house.  It is always a good idea to keep them in one room, until they are more comfortable with the new smells and sounds - you do not want your cat to get frightened and run away.

Cats are wonderful pets and once you are 'owned' by a cat you will never want to be with one ever again.  Like any other animal, it is our duty to be kind to them and take care of them and make sure they are happy and save.

If you have missed how your can take care of your dog, you can read here and also taking care of your rabbit.

There are approximately 60,000 hairs per square inch on the back of a cat and about 120,000 per square inch on its underside.

Very informative article, even I that i have had cats all my life didn't know some of these things. My 6 years old cat really loves bread, I don't feed her bread, but my family used to give her whenever she asked for it, now that we don't give her bread anymore she still begs for it, sometimes we drop a piece of it and she eats it, lol. Well, in fact, my cat eats everything, she's more like a dog than a cat she even feels happy when we come home, we don't give her anything bad for her health but I have to admit I fed her cooked meat (with salt, garlic, onion and all of these stuff), but now that I watched the video I will give her meat before I add the ingredients, I don't want my cat to die this young hehe. Thank you for the useful information, keep it up!

Thank you for reading - o cats are just awesome and I do not understand that people say cats do not have a personality - the are just on their own mission - love my cat so much - he is now turning 11, but does not eat anything but his food - full of nonsense - and only a particular type of food

I'm glad you also like cats, I read basically all posts about cats on my feed xD. I'm, writing an article about myths related to Toxoplasmosis maybe I won't post it this week because I'm very busy studying and and making other posts, but next week I will post it for sure, more posts about cats for steemiteducation :D

What a cute cat ! Thanks for sharing @anneke
