The people who help us every day - Life skills Gr 1-2

in #steemiteducation7 years ago (edited)

If you think about it there are a lot of people around us that help us besides our mom and dad and other people in our family.

People that we call "community workers."  These are people that look after and help the people of the community.

  • What is a community?

They deliver a service to make sure that all the people in the community (a specific area) get help or stay safe.

Lets look at a few of these workers and what they do.

  • firefighter - these people are very important if there is a fire at your house, school of business.  They risk their own lives to make sure other people are safe
  • policeman - they make sure that the criminals are caught and we do not have to be afraid to ask for help from them
  • nurse - the nurse helps the doctor and will also give you medicine
  • doctor - if you are sick you can go to the doctor - he/she will listen to your heart and do some tests to try and find out what is wrong with you and give you medicine to get better
  • librarian - if you go to a library to take out books, this lady will help you to find the correct books.  Have you ever been to a library?
  • traffic cop - if the traffic light is broken, they will direct you, they will help children cross the street safely and they also make sure that all the drivers on the road obey the rules
  • teacher - this person teaches you all types of thing like reading and maths
  • paramedics - they are almost like doctors and will pick you up in the ambulance and take you to hospital if you were in an accident or are sick

It is very important that we treat these people with respect, because they use all their time to help other people.

  • do you think we must ONLY treat these people with respect or do all people, no matter what their jobs are deserve respect?

Answer the following questions by saying which community worker will help in the following situations

  1. a cat is trapped in a tree
  2. you saw somebody steal a TV
  3. you have been coughing the whole night
  4. you need to do research for a project and need information
  5. school is out and you need to cross the road
  6. you are having problems with understanding some of your English homework
  7. you were in a car accident and needs to get to the hospital quickly

  • Look at the picture above - there are some more examples of people delivering a service to the community.  Say what is the job of each of these people and if you have ever had contact with any of them.

We have now learned that there are certain people that can help us if we are in trouble or have an emergency.  But do you know how to get hold of them?

  • You are going to do you own research and find the telephone numbers of the following people that we will need in an emergency (the numbers will depend on the area you live in so you will have to find out your own area's number for the following)
  1. police
  2. fire station
  3. ambulance
  4. child line or any organization that can help you if somebody hurts you in any way
  5. the electricity department
  6. the water department
  • Why would you need to phone the electricity and water department?
  • Write down the numbers and put it up somewhere in your house where everybody will be able to see it and use it when necessary
  • Watch the video for more information on community workers

  • For fun - draw a few community workers and write something you know about them in your own words.  You can also watch the video for some ideas

Police in America are not obligated to help you. See case Warren vs DC

I live in SOuth Africa and our police is also not up to scratch but this is at a point of view for kids - they need to know that they do not have to be scared of the police and can ask for help
