The Healing Power of a Cat Purr.

Cats have superpowers. Not only have they taken over the interwebz, cats are healthy for humans!

  • Cats are widely studied but science still does not know how a cat purrs. The commonly accepted theory used to be that purrs resulted from the sound of blood rushing through the inferior vena cava, the large vein that carries blood to the heart from the lower body. Recently, research suggests the sound is produced by the laryngeal muscles from moving the cats’ vocal cords. But these are still guesses.

  • Genetic paleontologists recently discovered that the X and Y chromosomes of cats and humans are remarkably similar despite the fact that the two species haven't shared a common ancestor for 90 million years.

  • Cats and humans emotional cortex of the brain is nearly identical.

But probably most amazing of all is how healthy cats are for humans- they purr at a frequency of 20-140 Hz which is medically therapeutic to humans.

  • Petting a purring cat releases stress and lowers anxiety.

  • Petting a cat lowers blood pressure.

  • The frequency of the cat purr promotes bone growth and regeneration..

  • Dyspnea and respiratory problems are reduced in both humans and cats during purring.

  • Cat owners have 40% less risk of heart attacks.

  • Purrs ease infection and swelling in joints, muscles, tendons, ligaments and repairs soft tissue.

  • Cats are used in sports hospitals and gyms (primarily in Russia where most of this research is conducted) for healing and getting athletes back in the game faster.

  • An old veterinary adage is "Put a cat in a room with broken bones and they will heal faster."

  • Purring in the range of 20-50 Hz reduces pain and headaches.

It takes energy to purr, and cats not only do it when content, but also when hurt, frightened or giving birth. Nature does not keep traits not related to survival advantage, so the fact that a cat purrs when ill or stressed suggests there is a good reason why it expends extra energy to purr. Purring contributes to healing and survival, and probably what accounts for the "cats have 9 lives" saying.

Healing by association.

Patients find their migraines heal when they lie their head beside a purring cat. The space program is researching how the cat purr can help recover lost bone density in astronauts. Many senior homes have adopted cats to live on site to help lower the residents blood pressure and help them live longer and healthier lives.

nice post on cat i also like cat .

Cats are great <3

So who are our best friend after all? Dogs or cats? :P

Right? I wonder how and where that adage came from originally...

My best friend is definitely the cat. They're quiet, clean, independent, and peaceful. And they purr ... which I never would've thought was anything beneficial.

And this got me thinking that maybe, a few million years from now, mankind will learn to purr. Then again, we can leave that to cats, who apparently do it so well.

Cats have been purrfecting their purrs for millions of years... I say lets leave it to them :) The ancient Egyptians worshipped cats. The penalty for accidentally killing a cat was death! They were a pretty advanced people, they knew things we are only just beginning to "discover"...

Right. So, as humans, let's strive to improve and evolve, even though we'll never be purrfect. :-)

I have noticed this myself. When I am having a bad day, from either pain or just something getting to me. My Jax will jump in my lap and flop himself down and beg to be pet and the purring begins. It is amazing how much better he makes me feel.

Jax's purrs are vibrating to the frequency of your health <3

What an amazing thought that is : )

I have one of those. When I am hurting from whatever Marley will force me to allow him to love on me <3 I love it when they do that!

Cat's are just simply amazing animals. Even when I am in a whole other room on other side of my place he comes running when I need him. I love that when I call his name he comes running out to me everytime. As if to say yeah I'm here what do you need?

They know immediately and will respond with empathy, which is a higher form of intelligence.

They are very intuitive <3

Wow. There is a LOT of information here that I didn't know. I'm going to suggest to my son that he borrow his sister's cat for a while to see if it will help his migraines :)

We have our adult daughter living with us, along with her three cats. Only one is really cuddly, and he seems to have latched onto our youngest daughter now. I'll tell her that all of that purring is good for her, too!

Cats also have a way of going where they are needed, too...

Wow did not know that about cats. I mean my family has owned pets including cats for years and we are both cat and dog family. Actually now when I think about it I am actually not surprised by your findings.

Pets have their way of making you feel better. Especially when coming home after a long hard day. Their happiness to see you always cheer you up and make you feel better.

Great post. Loved reading it. Have an amazing day. :)

Pets do have an amazing way of welcoming you, and settling in as a part of the family :)

I'd never had a cat until about 6 years ago. I love dogs but I'd never Bonded with them as closely as I did with my cats. It is profoundly difficult to part ways with them, however that may occur. I am a man, my cat is my best friend (aptly named Buddy) and I am forever grateful.

I am the same. I love, and rescue, all animals, but cats just... get me ;)

I have always thought cats were good to have around for humans but never knew these facts so interesting

They're proving to be exceptionally healthy :)

Yes indeed
I think I may even consider discussing getting one again

It's so cute :D I will follow u

Cat power, cute cat and everyone votes... I enjoyed your article

I'm happy to hear that! Thanks <3

That is so cool. I think it also works with dogs. My friend in Ontario has two dogs, same breed, and one year at our annual holiday gathering, I was feeling ill and feverish. The dog sat next to me and it helped and the next day I felt much better. While I did develop a light cold, it could have been much more and I truly believe her dog helped me not be super sick.

Awe, how sweet :)

I've heard many things about doctor prescribing Chihuahuas for children with asthma. They are supposed to cuddle the tiny dogs and it helps them breathe...

That's cool. Animals have the ability to absorb certain types of energy and each have their specialty.

Interesting article...I never knew all these about cats. Makes me love my 3 kitties even much more :)

Good <3 Hug your cat today, for she is boosting your health :)

I can say from personal experience that having cats can help greatly in stress relief. Something just reminds you to relax.

I always wondered about a cat's purr and have always loved cats.Thank you for sharing this with us. Now I need to go find my cat's for a cuddle.

That sounds like a purrfect plan :)

You are right, cat purr makes us humans happy!

Amazing I never knew that I knew cats were healing but not about the purr. I hope I can get cats again soon :)

I believe the right one comes along at the right time :)

Nice! I hope one comes along soon. And the housing agent allow me to keep it, without massive costs!

I hope so :) ANd you will have to share when it does <3

My cat knows when I am in pain and he nudges his head in the palm of my hand and lays on his side, lets out a soft "mierp mierp" as if to say, " Pet me and you will feel better." Works every time. : )

Hi @arbitrarykitten, after my cat dodo died few years ago, I was so heart broken and decided not to have any cat again. But of course I still love cats and they always understand that by climbing onto my laps and purring wherever I see one. Really a stress reliever 😊

I am so sorry to hear that. Yes, they are like a beloved family member and can be so difficult to lose...

I believe one day you will find another friend, when you both are ready <3

I hope so... Dodo will stay forever in my memory 😭

Aww.. Normally I skip cat posts because the internet is full of them, but your article is exceptional! Are the photos all yours? If not, we photographers always like to see a link to the source, even when it is not required :)
I can't have a cat anymore due to my allergy, but I will look for a "purring cat playlist" on Spotify next time I feel stressed, do you think that could help as well? :D

I did source, these are from Pixabay. I make sure I source all the time :) Bottom of the article.

A friend of mine who is a psychotherapist used the famous cat Lil Bub's you tube purr for an infant patient in the hospital. It had some sort of bone condition and the doctors were unsure if it would make it. I cannot remember if the baby was a girl or boy but it did end up puzzling the doctors and healing rapidly.
