Make it a rescue dog to foster a sense of responsibility to a bigger role than self. Here's our Hershey and our third rescue dog. She is a year old and was abused so we are working to socialize her to be less distrustful of people, especially children. She is a Dachshund/Lab mix with a very sweet personality once she gets to know you. It was 6 weeks before she would trust me enough to sit in my lap. In so doing she helped me be a more patient man. Something my wife of 48 years had given up on : )

Wow! I agree totally. I did an article a while ago where I mentioned the importance of "Adopt Don't Shop".. It is so good to see that you are doing the same. All of my cats are rescue cats too! And you are right, it is therapeutic for both the animal and the human. Are you posting about your rescue stories? I would love to see that! Going to check out your blog. So nice to meet you!
I remember seeing an article on adopt-a-pet and maybe that is how we originally connected. I had not thought about it before, but writing about our rescue experiences is an excellent idea. Thanks! Nice to meet you as well.
