Whatever method is used by the teacher in educating his students, but himself is the most effective example. A teacher is an example for his students. A teacher is the model. A teacher is the method.
Reduce the Violence at School
Have we ever been taught by the teacher as I told you in my last article when I went to school first? Annoyed, sad, angry, revengeful, or just ordinary? Teacher as I have told it, it turns out many in the world, as well as in Indonesia. Based on the results of a survey conducted by a group of observers on the development of education in Indonesia, 90% of Indonesian teachers punish their students by hitting and snapping, while 47% punish students by cleaning the toilet.
The slightest violence can cause psychological effects for children. In an occasion when I discuss with a teacher, he argues that the culture of violence comes from the habits of the parents at home. In this condition, the students will obey if we act violently, punished physically, or humiliated.
Apparently, from the teachers, there are still many who have a paradigm that an undisciplined child should be punished hard. If punished by hitting and hanging students under the hot sun, they assume normal, a punishment of students will be increasing its levels. This can be seen from the news in the mass media that there is a teacher who beat students until the student vomited. In fact, there are teachers who beat the students' mouths because they can not memorize a lesson.
What is the reason the teacher gave the punishment? I once posed the question to the teacher at a teacher training event, and the answers were varied, such as an undisciplined student, lazy to learn, not doing chores, being slow, not going to class, smoking, chatting when the lesson was going, and so forth.
Undisciplined behavior has always been the reason for teachers to violence against students. However, have the teacher asked why the students are acting undisciplined? Apparently, students do not like the way and behavior of teachers who do not have attention, favoritism, incompetence in teaching, too demanding, too rigid, hard, excessive in discipline, quick temper, and so forth.
So, how to solve it? It is necessary for the attention of various parties on how to attract students' attention. Persuasive communication, using a proactive language rather than a reactive language, and knowing more about ways to deliver lessons effectively and attractively are some of the approaches that a teacher needs to undertake. However, whatever the methods or ways the teacher does, he or she is the most effective example. A teacher is an example for his disciple. A teacher is the model. A teacher is the method.
Different Between Words and Deeds
The story of the dreaded teacher as I told in my last article is actually a matter of self-respect and exemplary. This is not always about the teachers. A trader in the market, deliberately reducing his scales, considers that reducing the 50-gram scales for every 1 kilogram of meat purchased by his customers is not something that matters. But it can be fatal where all of its customers turn to other merchants. An office employee who was ten minutes late thought his actions were not significant because many other employees were more late than he was. However, the delay is due to the decrease in the productivity of the company's work. A public official is convinced that the money he corrupts does not mean anything compared to the size of the state budget. Apparently, almost all public officials think so that the State's debt becomes more up to hundreds of trillions of rupiah, while the welfare of the people so slumped and the quality of public services becomes bad.
The teacher teaches discipline but often gets late to class. Master forbids her students from smoking, but from her mouth always blows smoke. The teacher talks about honesty but sets the strategy to graduate all of his students when the final exam (no integrity). A teacher asked to be respected, but they scorned and embarrassed his students. Teachers act discriminatively, need to be bribed, commit acts of violence, and so forth.
What's really happening is that market traders, office employees, public officials, and teachers are convinced that misbehaving, mistakes, dishonesty, and laxity will have no effect. However, their assumption is wrong. The entire system becomes corrupted. All the people became miserable and the quality of education became sober.
What is the root of the problem? Jansen Sinamo argues, there has been a widespread tendency within the organizational and professional bodies to compromise in the field of quality. For example, ethical quality, work ethic quality, competence quality, commitment quality, and performance quality. This compromise takes place from a personal level when people feel comfortable at the expense of their honor, their personal dignity, by willingly doing substandard things, even deliberately doing fraudulent things. Although initially, the misfortune proceeded on a small scale like the plague, the ugliness would spread rapidly to become catastrophic and disaster.
Furthermore, the solution of the above problem should start from the personal level in the main field, in this case, the teaching profession. Self-image and teacher honor need to be restored. This should be done so that every teacher feels embarrassed when doing all forms of violation, fraud, violence, and humiliation even on a small scale. Including, embarrassed for being late, embarrassed for corruption, embarrassed for giving and taking a bribe, embarrassed to ask for gifts, embarrassment to plagiarize, and embarrassment to accept something that is not his right.
After that, then the honor of the teaching profession can be rebuilt. The teachers will be proud of their achievement, proud of being on time, proud of their hard work, proud of being disciplined, proud for being honest, proud for being quality, proud of integrity, proud of being committed, and proud of being understated. Pride of honor must be maintained by carrying out work ethics and practicing superior teaching and maintaining honor and exemplary for individuals, institutions, and society.
People still expect education can be a strategic effort to produce the nation's children are civilized, intelligent, and noble. For that, the role of teachers is vital in realizing these ideals.
