Learning Agriculture At School

Agriculture is an area of education that aids students in enhancing and developing skills and values related to the importance of the environment. Agricultural lessons teach fundamental issues such as how food is grown, nutrition, and food security.

Agriculture as a science, is primarily aimed at growing plant products. To grow plants for food and other uses, a set of techniques has been developed to treat the land, preserve it, and nourish it.

Agriculture produces plant foods necessary for a human diet. Introducing lessons in agriculture to schools is a great teaching and learning resource to enhance positive attitudes about the environment by presenting students with a living natural laboratory. They can experience the ability to work the earth and create ecological awareness. Agriculture classes encourage behaviors like being more committed to healthy eating, personal and family nutrition, and the value of obtaining food with their own efforts.

The vegetables that can be obtained in a school garden include cabbage, tomatoes, lettuce, carrots, and potatoes. Since these can be cultivated mainly using watering, weeding, and the use of fertilizers as natural compost, these plants are great to grow with students. Students can be taught to make their own fertilizers using different materials of organic origin using the process of fermentation. Students can make their natural fertilizer for the school garden.

Topics about agriculture being taught in schools not only educates children how to obtain their own foods by growing them, but also teaches an eco-productive science which uses ingenuity and initiative to design gardening projects through the development of creative activities.

Advantages of a school garden.

The creation of a fruit orchard is useful at school and also at home. Growing fruit is an economic source for the healthy eating of families.

There are three major advantages to agriculture education at school being used at home:

  • Much of the family's daily food is made up of fresh vegetables. Having a home garden provides nutritious food for the family.
  • Growing them at home ensures that the vegetables are healthy and well-kept without being loaded with chemicals like pesticides.
  • By using organic waste as fertilizer, garbage production is reduced, which contributes to a less polluted planet. This saves the expense of buying fertilizer.

The harvested fruits can be used in the school lunchroom.

The children take care of the garden and cultivate plants that grow food. This is motivating and encourages the creation of an orchard at home. If the products taken from the land are not used in the school lunchroom, they can be sold to the community and the profits will allow the school to maintain their garden and buy materials for hosting an agriculture program for the students.
