Mummify a chicken...
I have seen the older kids at our school do this, but have never considered trying it at home, but hey, always a first.
The history of mummifying
Mummification is when the methods of embalming or in other words treating the dead body. The ancient Egyptians called if mummification. The Egyptians removed all the moisture from the body by leaving it to dry in order for the body not to decay easily.
In the Egyptian religion it was very important to preserve the body of the dead in as much a life-like manner as possible.

Mummify your chicken
Today we are going back into history and try to mummify a little chicken. You can also mummify an apple etc.
You will need the following
- Small chicken
- Salt
- Baking Soda (Also known as Bicarbonate of soda)
- Ziploc Bag
- Cloth/Paper Towels
- Bowl
Instructions
- Wash the chicken.
- Use a paper towel (If you have old cloth rather use this) to properly dry of the chicken.
- Use a bowl to mix the salt and the baking soda together.
- Take the baking soda and salt mix and pack the inside of the chicken first.
- Now open the ziplock bag and pour some of the mix in the bottom, put the chicken in.
- Pour the rest of the mix in and make sure the chicken is properly covered before you close the ziplock bag.
- The salt will assist with dehydrating the chicken. Check your mix regularly. If it looks like your mix is too wet from the moisture, throw out the extras and at a new mixture in.
- It will take about two weeks, maybe a little more to properly mummify the chicken.
Some kids my be grossed out, but let them push through.

Not sure why I would do it, but this does seem cool.
In Social Studies, I think Grade 6 or 7 in the Namibian Curriculum we teach the children about different preservation methods eg. Salt preservation.Last year they "mummified" different apples and this year they are already busy with their chickens.
Very unusual topic, made me smile thinking about how we are forever telling children not to play with their food.
Considering all the videos they watch with vampires and mummies, it is good to know how it is actually done Tanya, never given this thought #teamsouthafrica
