Question:

Some teachers believe that homework is not important, and that children must do all work at school because parents are too involved in completing the projects for their children. What is your feeling about this. Do you give out homework or not?

Answer:

I personally believe that giving out homework is okay, for as long as we don't give them for students to do over the weekend or a long vacation. It is also important for students to enjoy the weekend and long vacation... give them time to fully concentrate on having fun and spending time with their loved ones without thinking of anything school-related.

Giving them homework on a school day is important. It will serve as a review for them when they get home. If you assigned a task which is related or relevant to the topic discussed, then it would be beneficial for the student. Aside from the topic discussed, you can also provide homework which can be related to the upcoming topic. That way, the students will have an idea as to what they're learning next in class.

Regarding the issue of parents getting involved in projects, I think it's okay. Parents working on projects together with the student will not only promote learning, but also bonding between them. Well, there should also be a limitation. If the project or homework is so simple, it would be better if the students do it by themselves. Parents can just check them later on.

Parents and teachers must also have a deal regarding this. Parents should know that the students' homework is something the students should do, not them. However, teachers can also sometimes provide homework which involves parents as well.

All in all, I agree with teachers giving out homework for as long as there's a limitation of the parents' help and that they're only given out for the purpose of "review" or "preparation" on school days.
