Located in the Arashiyama Park, the 'Sagano Bamboo Forest' is one of the most beautiful forests in the world. The forest covers an area of 16 square kilometers with thousands of bamboo trees in this picturesque grove. When the wind blows, the bamboo stalks sway in the wind making contact with one another, creating sounds that have been compared to wind chimes. The sounds add a special atmosphere to the forest and has a calming effect on visitors.
The species of bamboo growing here is called "Moso". The tree originated from China and it takes only one month to grow to a height of 20 meters with a diameter of 20cm, the trees can reach a height of 40 meters and 35cm in diameter.
In Japan the bamboo trees serve as guards at many temples, the Japanese believe that bamboo trees protect from evil spirits. The 'Sagano Bamboo Forest' is one of a hundred protected sights in Japan.
