Research holistic applying constructivism to create a slow sand filter in the school

in #steemiteducation7 years ago (edited)

Hello appreciated community stations, steemiteducation, sndbox-alpha and readers in general, I agree with this research report, based on the experiences fruit of a study holistic and design of field research, conducted to generate an integrative environment and constructive in the interest of generating knowledge in children from sanitary techniques for the treatment of drinking water.

To achieve a suitable environment and interactions, promoted values of responsibility, solidarity and partnership to synchronize participant action; This yield fruitful results and improved relations between the team (boys, girls and teachers). Having this harmony school, we began to build a slow capacity sand filter to treat 10 liters of water.

Rationale of the project

People, animals and plants need water to live and grow. However, in many places of the world, people do not have the quantity and quality sufficient to meet your needs. When a population has not guaranteed this valuable resource, it is facing many difficulties and are at risk of contracting serious diseases. On the other hand, its use is not limited to human consumption; on the other hand, is used in the development of a range of activities such as agriculture, livestock, tourism, health, economics, among others which require considerable amounts of water.

On the other hand, the World Health Organization in 2006, stated that to systematically ensure the safety of drinking water and protect public health, it must special attention given to the implementation of strategic plans for the safety of the water. This concern about treatment of drinking water, I delimité contextual and geographically the study and raised the statement: How to contribute to improve the quality of drinking water in the community where the school is located...?

[Own source] Solid wastes from domestic origin near the fountain of water catchment.
[Own source] Disposal a few meters from the source of acquisition and distribution

General objective

Make a socio-environmental diagnosis to promote the domestic design of a filter slow sand in the treatment of drinking water, acceptable and reliable sanitary standards for the benefit of the community... (Venezuela).

Methodological foundation

The approach to holistic was performed in the company of children gathering primary information through the application of a questionnaire. Within this contextual framework, didactic interaction allowed that the children involved in the guided activity and will consult the representative sample consisting of 186 units of analysis (housewives) of a world population of 620. The innocence and behavior of children who are a natural sponge to absorb information, did that work was done and above all that they felt confident in that it had controlled the situation. By involving the children, educators and some representatives, a research team that provided valuable elements for the project was achieved soon.

The method that the child was the protagonist of your representative and relatives interviewer was not fortuitous and as such gave good results. In the survey of variables where are asked about perceived alteration of odor, taste or color of the water, there were relatives who omitted the true answer and the same interviewer reminded them; because children are not as good at lying. Then representatives admitted to oblivion and be pointed out the correct answer.

Interpretation of results

The result of the data shows that almost the entire community benefits from the provision of piped water from deep well (aquifer), whose water has altered the physical characteristics, since a significant number of people they agree that its organoleptic sensors perceive it. This in addition to the improper disposal of solid waste in public places, health problems related to water and the absence of any method of treatment of the resource, strengthened research and I raised with the speed of the case, a series of inductions health since we started from the school site with the most vulnerable population to the consumption of untreated water and who are protected from the event of study population universe.

Actions taken

  • Discussed and agreed a campaign of environmental awareness to reduce pollution by improper disposal of solid waste close to water well and public sites in the community.
  • Perform days of sanitation at the school site, sites of Community interest and the water well environment.
  • Implement a domestic system for the treatment of water crude to improve the safety of drinking water and ensure the safety of the fluid, while managing a filtration and chlorination system to install in the source of recruitment.
  • Since the water has turbidity and stain sanitary parts, as well as, they settle solids to pass water more than two hours at rest; taking into account that it is a community generically scarce economic resources, I suggested using a simple and practical sand filter capable of retaining the type and size of solids present in the water.
  • Complementary to the filtration proposed a method of chlorination post filtering that only retains sediments and some algae, most does not eliminate the pathogens and viruses.

Experimental procedure

After disinfecting materials, the students proceeded to place the bottle inside a layer of approximately 3 centimeters thick cotton; He added over a layer of gravel (20 mm) of 3 cm; sand with dimensions between 0.5 and 1 cm to 3 cm in thickness.

In this way the water passes through gravel, sand and sand, fine together with charcoal (used for testing) it works perfectly for the physical characteristics of the water that is extracted from the deep well and distributed in the community. Actually the process consists of inducing the turbid water percolation through the block of material. This prototype can be used to treat about 10 to 12 liters of water, later materials, should be replaced since being a design whose dimensions does not have sufficient capacity to retain solids without saturating particles, the granular materials that make it up must be replaced. However, with the biofilter of gravity with a capacity of 120 liters which is the output of this study, if it can be done using the technique of backwash solids removal.

Small scientists concluded have their general purpose of designing a device with easy access and low-cost resources, but ensure the retention of solids in suspension that are generating public health problem in the community. Them being the most affected because of their vulnerability.

Materials
  • 2 l plastic bottle
  • Cotton
  • Gravel
  • Sand
  • Sandy
  • Charcoal
  • Scissors

Conclusions

  • participatory interaction author, coauthors, study subjects, collaborators and environment strengthened interpersonal relationships and generated an atmosphere appropriate to treat this public health problem. The various techniques of communication and information employed gave favorable results with an estimate of 85%.
  • The spiral holopraxico sheltered the students and made them assume behaviors and behavior worthy of a researcher who is conducting a qualitative survey of social conditions in a problem that is inherent to his person and that he is applying in a participative manner for their satisfactory resolution.
  • By the results according to organoleptic sensory perception, water should sometenerse to physical, chemical and bacteriological analysis to establish with precision the quality of water that is extracted from the source of recruitment.
