I haven't been on Facebook in months, and with everything I have going on with the Writer's Block and Noblewitness, it was time.
It's a strange feeling. I remember signing up for my Facebook account in 2005, back when you still had to have a college email address to get an account. It was fun, kinda like Myspace 2.0. Then, as inevitably happens when a platform sticks around long enough, it became stale. Worse still, Zuckerberg, that weird anteater, robot kid, went whole hog on collecting and collating as much data from his users as possible. Facebook quickly became the single most intrusive app in my life, as I'm sure it is for most people.
So I decided it's finally time to kick the habit. I deleted FB messenger (the crap shoot that it was), downloaded my pictures and contact list from FB in a spiffy zip file, and deleted my account. I've had friend and family asking me why, like they're bewildered at the notion of getting rid of the worst privacy violator in my life. I keep telling them the same thing: I'm done with all the bullshit.

Congrats on cutting ties! :-)
I've thought a lot about deleting Facebook lately. As it is, though, I only check in once or twice a week, and I've never used Messenger.
It does keep me in touch with a couple groups and friends I wouldn't hear from otherwise. And if I hadn't checked in four months ago, I wouldn't have known about the job I have now, which is essentially the only job I ever actually wanted. So I feel like deleting it entirely would be setting me up to miss opportunities.
So I think it's a tool - and one that needs to be used in moderation. But when it feels like you're being used by a tool rather than using it, yeah, it's probably time to get rid of it.
See, and that's what I've wondered about as well: missed opportunities. Thankfully I have lines of communication to everyone I actually want to talk to outside of Facebook, so I really haven't lost a beat.
I was addicted to it the same way most people are. Scrolling aimlessly, getting into pointless arguments, etc. etc. Even the memes weren't worth it. lol
Heh - most of those memes aren't worth the screen-space they're printed on!
Fuck ya! :D Done with all the bullshit! I would get rid of my FB account but... I'm addicted. :( Plus I run my business out of there. Maybe once I'm a little more established in the world I'll say adios to Zuckerberg and his aardvark, ant eating face. I'm proud of you though!
You'll get there too, baby. In the meantime, I have a Zuck meme for you that I think will make you feel better about it:
Puke. Lol.
I've thought about, and perhaps I finally will. To be honest I just don't give enough of a shit to go back on the site and delete my old account, but I already haven't used it for anything in almost two years. It's funny how I still manage to get alerts for random shit though and I don't even have the app installed on my phone anymore. Anyway, grats on the solid move. :)
Yeah, Facebook is insidious. I suspect even with this move they'll still find a way to tap my phone somehow lol. Thanks for the comment, boss :)
Grand decision and welcome to the club! Your life will literally change without FB (for good), I know this from my experience :D
p.s. thank you for the support on my situation from a few days ago man, I really appreciated that!
