I guess many cultures have a “what you’re supposed to do” type of attitude.
I vacillate between following traditions and choosing for myself. The older I get the more I realize that “choosing for myself” has consequences bigger than me. Sure, I may be in a better position because of my specific decisions, but the whole is weaker.
I have to ask: “Does going against traditions make me a stronger person? Or a selfish American?”
