In my entire existence, the books that I’ve really finished reading can only be counted by my fingers (not kidding) since I am more into quick reading. It’s not that I hate books it’s just that it makes me sleepy if I try to read. Not everyone is like this, but are you?
I tried to google why and the reasons that I’ve found was the same as what I’ve been presuming.
While reading, obviously you’ll use your eyes to see what you’re reading. From your eyes your brain will process what you’re reading to make meaning. Since your brain process the texts you’ve read and your eyes also keeps moving, it will make the two organs tired. Their next action will of course to take a rest, leading for your eyes to shut down and you will be sleepy.
Additionally, when you are reading you will find the perfect position for you to read comfortably, you can either sit or lie down if you want. To make it more perfect, you will look for a spot that is peaceful and quite for you to really savor everything. These things can put you into the state of relaxation which might make you sleepy.
Another thing is that when the book doesn’t interest you. When you don’t find it interesting, it will bore you. When it will bore you, you will lose focus and you mind will start to wander, and sometimes wandering leads to sleep.
It’s just so hard to control sleep sometimes. I even get annoyed when this will happen to me. Sometimes if I really can’t control it, I’ll just leave it be.
There are a lot of techniques to avoid this though. You can drink coffee, cola, energy drink or take a shower OR put yourself in uncomfortable position. It works to me, really.
