My trip last year to Cambodia still haunts me... it was harrowing to walk the streets of Phnom Penh knowing that every person you interacted with was affected by the genocide in one way or another. This not so distant past was most evident when touring the high school (turned museum) which was converted into a makeshift prison by the Khmer Rouge regime. The contrast between the remnants of the original building and the brutal 'modifications' was staggering. It was hard to imagine that once upon a time the sound of children laughing echoed through these halls....
